Japanese bust inflation may reflect economic ups and downs
A flick of the TV remote control any evening will reveal a continuous succession of variety shows and other programming featuring a procession of spectacularly well-endowed starlets. Nikkan Gendai grins that the generously endowed mammaries of such performers as Megumi (94cm), Eiko Koike (91cm) --- once regarded as the best Japan had to offer, have, of late been exceeded by the spectacular "I" cup-sized whoppers of former NHK announcer Eri Furuse, which measure a stunning 103 centimeters.
Has hyperinflation suddenly begun to run rampant in Japanese showbiz? Have such measurements also become the norm among amateurs as well? Indeed they have. This is confirmed by a survey conducted by Wacoal, a major manufacturer of women's lingerie.
Wacoal's most recent survey, released the end of April, compared the figures of 312 women's chest measurements taken in 1987, 89 and 91 and compared them with 261 women measured in 1999-2001. It noted that while there was no increase in the women's heights, the size of their breasts showed considerable increases -- of between 9 to as high as 21.3 percent.
"I suppose the main factor in breasts becoming larger is women's increased ingestion of cholesterol, which serves as the basic material in female hormones," says Dr. Mitsugu Shika, director of the Yokohama Yuai Clinic. "Estrogen improves the body's synthesis of fat, and makes breasts appear luscious and buoyant.
"With the Japanese body type, flesh does not typically accumulate around to the collarbone, so compared with foreigners breasts have not developed to the same extent, resulting in Japan's 'bowl-shaped breasts' that jut straight forward.
"More cholesterol would explain why they've become larger in such a short time."
As close as anyone can tell, this tendency for breasts to swell sharply appears to have begun around 1990.
According to data on cup sizes compiled annually by Triumph International, another manufacturer of women's undergarments, 58.6 percent of Japanese women wore an "A" cup in 1980, but only around 30 percent could still squeeze into this size by 1988. Last year, "A" cups accounted for only 10 percent of all output, and it appears that if the trend continues, the flat-chested breeds may be in danger of extinction.
Dr. Shika also notes that recent breast growth is probably the result of psychological and economic factors.
"Larger breasts can be said to be one manifestation of economic prosperity," says Shika. "But with such recent problems in the news as concerns over the shortfall of funds for the national pension scheme and other economic anxieties, these might very well put a damper on any future growth."
Might sagging male voter support over receding bust lines, Nikkan Gendai wonders, some day soon be the factor that ultimately drives the Koizumi government from its seat of power?
