Encoding a asf file.

I just want to encode a asf movie file to a avi file or a mpeg file. I downloaded the compondents via terminal because I couldn't do it the other way and I downloaded the ffmpeg software too. It says that the installation was sucessful but, ffmpeg is not working properly. I'm not to this whole thing and yes, I did read the manual.

If the encoding fails, post the process output (blue "i" icon) containing any error messages.

I tried that but, now instead of the terminal textedit opens up. The movie always encodes very fast and has never worked like it should. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.
