  1. Hello all

I have a Sony TRV19 MiniDV camcorder, and have just got a firewire cable so I can finally get the video I have so far recorded onto my system.

I noticed that all of the footage I have taken so far has been recorded with in with fields. Is it possible to take footage without fields (I believe this is called 'progressive'?) with this camera?

I'd have thought it would be an option with many people not having output to TV as their main use any more, but I can't see an option anywhere.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Short answer: No, it is not possible.

Actually, the vast majority of camcorder owners do simply play their camcorder footage on their TV sets, unedited. People like us who actually import our footage into the computer and edit it down to DVD or VCD are still very much in the minority, so your average consumer-level camcorder isn't going to have people like us in mind. If you need progressive-scan recording, you'll probably have to look into pro equipment.

  3. That's a shame, but thanks for the quick answer solarfox!

This may not be the best section of the forum for writing this, but it kind of follows on. How does my DVD software seem to be able to show non progressive footage as though it is progressive?

There seems to be many different ways of removing interlaced fields from video footage, all of them requiring processing and with varying degrees of success from quite poor to pretty good. So how can mt DVD software show the video in real time without any trace of field interlacing and what seems to me to be great results?

And is there a way of using whatever method they are using to process the video and re-save it without fields rather than using the other methods?

There is no need to deinterlace the video if you intend to make a DVD, SVCD, VCD etc. that will be played back on a DVD player hooked up to a TV set.

The only time you should deinterlace is when you are creating a video that will only be played back on a computer monitor.

And yes what you are attempting to do is known as deinterlacing.
