  1. Hi..

Pulling my hair out - looking for the most compatable inkjet printable DVD-R media. Money isn't an issue here. I realise a 100% compatable DVD-R is impossible but I'd like to shorten the odds.

Thought i'd solved it - got some Reitek G04's but whilst they play OK on some DVD players, other's stop part way or won't play at all. Tthe DVD's are bulk packed without labels but identify as Reitek G04. Each DVD has been verified after burning.

Using XP - Nero 5.5xx. Burner is an LG. I've also got an NEC 1300 with the latest firmware - why won't these burn at 4x in this drive?

    TIA
    Nosmo

Taiyo Yuden and Maxell are the best 2 printable DVDs I've found.

    TY ~$1.50 each
    Maxell ~$1.25 each.

Verbatim is good upto almost the end, you need to shave the last 500 mb off, or else they will skip. Didn't use to be that way with Verbatim, but they're made in Taiwan now.......... and command ~$1.60 each.

If you wanted to try something cheaper, Prodisc seems to be a pretty consitant brand. I used to use these all the time, until TY and Maxell became cheaper. Prodisc are ~$0.70 each.

If you were looking for +R media, I can say that the Optodisc 8x media burnt at 4x with my NEC 2500 has been a stellar performer, and are ~$0.80 each.

  3. Panasonic authoring media on a Panasonic authoring drive should be 100% compatible.

    Wise ass

    But you are probably right.
Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?

Not only do I disagree with you...but if you read the poor chap's post, you'd see that Ritek hasn't worked very well for him (and me and a few others).

Inkjet media can be rated on a whole other scale....Riteks outright sugg. The few good burns I do have cause overheating in a couple of my older standalones.

I like Maxell printables...burn EXACTLY like their yellow top branded.

TY printables are good too....just not worth the extra cost for a couple less parity errors.

If you live in the States, you can buy Maxell retail spindles at www.newegg.com (silver top 635127) or at www.shopperwiz.com (635127, white matte 635129) or www.pagecomputers.com (white matte 635129).

Panasonic doesn't even make authoring drives. The only ones available are from Pioneer and are the S-101 (3.95 GB) and the S-201 (both 3.95 and 4.7 GB).

  9. Thanks for all your replies - think look into Maxells. Your replies prompt 2 questions.

Panasonic authoring media on a Panasonic authoring drive should be 100% compatible - does this mean the LG is a badged Panasonic.

The Ritek Media I have is unlabelled - does this mean it may not be as good as genuine Riteks. For some reason, 2 NEC 1300 drives have refused to burn these at 4x, yet Ritek is on the NEC Approved list for 4x

1 more thing - I have the software installed to run the LG with DVD-ram. Everything works fine but could this cause errors.

  10. Authoring media is not an option for the average user. The Pioneer S-201 drive costs in excess of $4,000 dollars.

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?A=ShowProduct&kw=PIDVRS201&Q=&O=&sku=195293

Authoring media cannot be recorded in a general use dvd-r recorder and is significantly more expensive. Its greater compatibility due to the smaller laser wavelength is more evident in much older players as opposed to current players on the market.

I burn Ritek G04's fine on my NEC 1300A using Herrie's hacked 1.08 firmware.
