Put 2 hard drives on the same controller, i.e either primary or secondary controller. Hard drives considered a faster drive compare to optical drives. So, put in this way will not much affect the performance of the drive since the slower drive, i.e optical drives is not on the same controller. (fyi, slower drive such as optical drive operate at 33MHz, whereas harddrives operate at at least 66MHz. If hard drive and optical drive were put on the same controller, the performance will be affected by the slower drive.)

For the optical drives, guess which drive's firmware is likely to be updated then put that drive in master because some firmware updates require the drive to be located on master.
