    Does Vegas 4.x or Premiere version.xx, support AC3, Mpeg2, natively (without plugins?)

    Thanks!

    Premiere 6.5 has built in mpeg encoder from Mainconcept. Premiere Pro has mpeg encoder + DVD authoring.

  3. From my experience,

    Vegas can edit VOBs directly, as well as MPEG-2 program streams. It cannot edit elementary MPEG-2 streams.

    It can output to MPEG 2 and AC3 as well, with the purchase of the proper plug-ins (Sony AC-3 Plugin / Mainconcept MPEG Plugin).

    It cannot edit AC-3.

    So adobe just licenses this encoder and bundles this with their software package. Is that how this works? Do you have URL for Mainconcept? Is Premiere Pro the replacement for 6.5 like Photoshop CS is for version 7?

    Vegas ver 4? I can not figure out how to import VOB's directly into version 4. How do you do this?

    Btw, I am a little new at this... by saying program stream you mean both combined (Video+Audio), yes? By elementary files you mean seperated (demuxed) audio or video (only) files, yes? Are we talking the same language here?

    Much Thanks!!

    To edit MPEG2 in Premiere Pro (upgrade to 6.5), you have to buy a $ 250 mainconcept plug-in;

    Its native function is just to final encode the edited movie in AVI atmosphere......

    Exactly, while it's a great product, dealing with its high capabilities can be a nightmare;
    To encode in AC3 format, you have to buy a $ 350 Surcode plug in;
    To edit MPEG2, a $ 250 plug-in

    Note that from v 1.5 you'll have problems if you get a virus attack and have to do a full reformat....Adobe admits that....

    Yea.. so its a little on the pricey side for entry level editing. Too bad, the videos of what it can do seem pretty good.

    I am working with Dvd-lab, TDA, TmpEnc plus at the moment... but thought about trying these more expensive type products...

    where does vegas fit in this picture? Is that a little less of a learning and price curve?

    Thanks!
