I have the Plextor 708A. No problems with this drive. It burns flawlessly using the following brands of dvd media, TDK DVD-R, IMATION DVD+R 4x speed that can be burned@8x with 708A, MAXELL 4x DVD-R, FUJI (TAIYO YUDEN) DVD-R 4x & VERBATIM DVD-R. Those are the recommended brands of dvd media that Plextor supports. I also use the compatible brand RITEK DVD-R 4x G04 orange landscape discs and COMPUSA DVD-R which is manufactured by PRINCO which is known to be crappy media. The only brand that I had a problem with is MEMOREX DVD+R 4x which some of them are manufactured by CMC which is also known to be crappy media.
All of the above burn great and playback on my standalone dvd players. As well as in PANASONIC & SONY standalone dvd players. Some may say the Plextor 708A is picky about media. If you use the recommended brands of dvd media there should be no problems. Some blame the drive when it could be the brand of media being used. Lots of variables in burning dvds to the brand of media you use to the software you use to create the disc and how the drive is set up in you computer.
Good luck on your purchase.
