This is really more of a general question...it affects my DVD reader, too.

But it seems that whatever the Volume Label of the drive is when it starts up - that is what it remains....for all eternity...or at least until I reboot.

If I boot the computer with no dvd in it, then the volume label is "DVDR Drive"...if I boot the computer with a blank DVD in the burner, then its volume label is "CD Drive" (odd?)....if I boot the computer with an already written DVD or CD in the drive, then the volume is the volume label of that particular disk, like "Backup 7"....but the point is, even if I eject that disk and put another one in, the volume label will remain "Backup 7", even when there is no disk or a blank disk in the drive!

Why does Windows XP do this, and is there a fix?

You probably have AutoRun disabled. I used to have mine turned off as well and I saw the same behaviour. I wanted to be able to see the labels, though, so I had to re-enable AutoRun. It's evil but that's what you'll have to do.

Try looking here for a fix.

  3. Buggy OS.

It does this to me at seemingly random times. I've learned to ignore it.

It wouldn't, neither would CTRL+F5 for a forced refresh.

...and this is why. AutoRun is what allow the OS to update the volume label. Stupid, I know, when all I want to happen is insert a CD/DVD and just be able to remind myself hours later what's in the drive without ejecting or looking at the contents in Explorer. I wish I knew why Microsoft chose this particular way of working.

I don't ever remember specifically disabling autorun, I just remember going into the "Disc Detector" control panel, and unchecking the box marked "Enable Disc Detector"...that was it.

I should add that the Disc Detector control panel is a product of Creative, and I have no idea what software it was installed with. I'm guessing that installing the Disc Detector disabled autorun. Unlike autorun, the Disc Detector is *easy* to disable/enable!

  7. this happens to me sometimes. to get it to refresh, open my computer, right click on the drive containing the disc & then select 'eject', and then close the tray (try both the button & selecting 'close tray' when you right click)
