I have an NEC burner and CDBurnerXP Pro software. Both have worked flawlessly together for three years. Hundreds of discs have been burned without an error. First problem popped up today. I insert the blank dvd, click on disk information, and it says there's no disk in the burner. I've tried several discs but no dice. Does this indicate a problem with the XP software or my NEC burner?

    thanks for any advice

Have you tried any other burning software? I would try imgburn.
Can the writer read other discs without any problem?

Yes, the writer can still read (and play) previously burned disks. When a writer goes bad, I wonder if this is one of the first signs. I'll give imgburn a look-see.

No, although one of the cd/dvd drives on my Dell suddenly stopped working. But would that affect an external burner?

Sounds like time to get a new burner. My old nec-1300 did the same thing and it was about the same age as yours, 3 years or so. After a while it stopped reading discs as well as not burning them at all. Cheaper to replace than deal with the headache. You can get a good brand name burner for around $25.00-$30.00. Start off looking at newegg.com

  7. Look at cdfreaks.com or the DVD burner manufacturer's page for new firmware to flash to the drive. It sounds to me like the drive isn't recognizing newer media. If there is a firmware update available for it that could be all you need to take care of your problem.

know it sounds kinda left field, but check for a root kit. one of the obvious things they did to my rig was make audio cd's unreadable and a few of my dvd's also. havent had one in a while, but if it tied into the win driver in the same manner anydvd does , it can report a blank or emty drive to the os even though the drive is occupied because the app asks the os and the os asks the driver. like i said left field though
if all else fails read the manual

Discovered the problem. The software was searching on E drive for the burner when it was actually connected to F. Problem solved. Thanks for your help.
