  1. I really hope someone here can help me, coz I really don't want to reinstall win2000...

After I change my videocard from a Matrox G450etv to a AIW Radeon I can't playback any MPEG2 file, all other files works fine.

I tried reinstalling the ATI drivers, DVD software, VIA drivers, but noting seems to help.

    It's like the is no MPEG2 filter/codec.

I know it will work if I reinstall win2000, coz it has happen before when I used the G450etv and Matrox's DVD software.

But I have used Matrox uninstall util. but I don't know if the also remove the DVD software 100%.

Maybe there are still some software left from the Matrox DVD software, I just need to remove?

How can you check to see, that the ATI DVD (which I guess has the MPEG2 codec) software has been installed the right way and that Win2000 is trying to use the ATI MPEG2 codec and not the Matrox one? (I thing this is the ploblem)..

    Any experts on Win2000?

I'm no expert but you could try this. Run regedit and search for any references to your old video card and delete them. That may help. I find that usually solves any problems caused by sticky bits of software that cling to the registry despite being uninstalled.

Just be careful you don't delete anything NOT related to the Matrox...

  3. Well, I am speaking from a Radeon 32MB owner's point of view, and not an A-I-W owner. What I know is gained from reading lots of reviews and tips from other forums ... .

Ok, the main thing I learnt is that you first of all need to uninstall your Matrox video card. That means install the dirvers and then set your display to Standard VGA. Only then do you install the Radeon card + drivers.

Then again, I have tried installing my radeon in win2k, but I have lots of problems even to get the card working. I read that it is something to do with AMD and VIA problems or something ... I still haven't solved it.

There is a viaagp patch in AMD's website, but I can't seem to download it.

Anyway, good luck getting the card working.

  4. without going into too many details I'll just offer a solution - I have a good MPEG-2 codec with installer that will work for you - just drop me an email

I had the same problem - the AIW installed DVD player and the AIW File Player didnt let me open MPEG-2 files in TMPGEnc or MS Media Player or anything else ...

I use it with my MMC software and W2K and have had no problems

  5. Hi,

Hope you don't mind me asking (I'm fairly new to all this) but I have a 2 year-old AIW 128, which can supposedly capture in MPEG2, but nothing on my system will recognise these. I can record *something* which sits on my drive as an .mp2 file which nothing will open.

Would the codec you mention possibly solve this too?

Sort of got the same problem; but I need to figure out a way to install mpeg2 codecs on a system without any other software or hardware. I just need a PC to view mpeg2 and nothing all. I sort of came to a conclusion that it is more or less impossible to find just only the codecs. So if You willing to share your mpeg2 codecs I would be happy.

  7. Sounds like You're missing the codecs as well. I've been looking around for mpeg2 codecs to be installed without ant other software/hardware and I found nothing. I'm using a Hauppauge PVR board with mpeg2 chip on. But, ofcourse as You self mention it would be nice to play the mpegs on another system. The new MediaPlayer 7.x from Microsoft is totally crap since everytime so often bounces up on the net to look for codecs and returns that media was not supported. Bah!

  8. morgaine,

Rename the mp2 to an mpg and it should work fine. I also have an AIW 128. Many programs look at the extention and just don't know what to make of it.

I'm suggesting it is a assocation problem because "something" is produced at the end.

  9. rename and mp2 to mpg is an association problem

if you rename an mp2 to mpg and it still doesn't opent then it's an mpeg-2 codec issue

I have a fix - I ask people to email me for the fix so I dont have to follow the threads in this forum

  10. Thanks Tommy,

I tried renaming the file, but although the name is now 'test.mpg' if I click 'Properties' it still registers as a mp2 file - am I doing something wrong?
