The GPU has a sound device on the card itself if I can remember right. You may have to disable your onboard sound such as your Realtek or whatever you have and then see if Windows detects any audio device.

Be sure that your all up to date with your bios version and GPU drivers.

You can also search through these common questions from the ati website.

    http://support.amd.com/us/psearch/Pages/psearch.aspx?type=2.4.1&product=2.4.1.3.36.3.2...audio&items=20

It may depend on your OS and something to do with the Catalyst Control Center. It may need to be updated or I think it may read the default connections as DVI if your using XP so you would have to change it to HDMI

This card has two DVI connections, which do not carry audio, not HDMI. You must be using the DVI to HDMI adapter either built in to your cable or connected to one of the DVI ports. Sorry, no sound in, no sound out.
    Have a good one,

I'm a little confused.. Which card is being used here??

Look at these 4870 cards on Newegg, they have HDMI connections

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010380048%201305520549%20...on%20HD%204870

Go to the link I provided earlier and they talk all about the problems with the audio streaming through the HDMI for THIS card. Click the right question in the link and you'll get your exact problem.. one that I think you may have anyways shorto

I was looking at a picture on the AMD site. Looking at the products at Newegg, my favorite spot too, show different manufacturers with different connections. Some dual DVI with included HDMI adapters, some with one each of DVI and HDMI and some with dual HDMI.

However, the ATI version does seem to have dual DVI:

Ok, so I guess we need some more info from you shorto. It does say ATI Radeon 4870 in the thread header but a lot of people list their card like that even though they have a XFX or whatnot.

I figured you had the HDMI output since you said "via HDMI cable" not stating that your using an adapter sooo... which do you have??

Either way your question should be answered. Good luck
