  1. Are there any free programs out there that'll do some sort of chroma-key type thing with AVI files? Basically I just want to be able to put some (probably one-colour) video over another. Can AVISynth do anything like this?

If there aren't any free tools for doing this, what other (probably humungous and hideously expensive) programs can do this?

Sony Screenblast Movie Studio 3 can do this (with any color) $99
Sony Vegas 4, the bigger brother, for those with real money

check out Wax, I haven't dug too deeply, but it has overlay functions.

you can also hit your local computer store, take a look for a program called Magix Audio / Video - it's a discontinued program, but it has built in chroma-key functions. I picked up a new-in-box Deluxe version for $10 at an Office Depot.

also check Zwei-Stein - I don't like the interface, but it does do overlays and chroma-key.

are you trying to overlay stills, or motion video? if it's a still over motion video, I'm pretty sure Wax can do it.

  4. I'm trying to overlay motion video, which is why I've got this problem - I think even VirtualDub can do stills!

I found Zwei-Stein can do chroma-key stuff - it even has specific selection for just green key, which makes it even easier. Only problem is the interface is truly AWFUL - it took me at lest 5 minutes to find out how to make the effects actually work.

Seriously, what the hell were they thinking when they designed that?[/i]
