    Oh... my...
    http://www.techreport.com/reviews/2004q2/geforce-6800ultra/index.x?pg=1

The NV40 chipset is going to be a juggernaut when it's released. At least now I know which video card I'll be getting. Forget the Parhelia and on to the 6800. Gaming and workstation performance. The power supply thing is interesting though. It has two molex connectors for power that must come from seperate rails. It also requires a 480w PSU. I kept telling all my gaming friends that the day would come when they would rue their power-skimping. Now I just need to find out more power consumption specifics. I may have to house the SCSI drives outside my case on another PSU.

  2. I'm OK, I have a 550-watt PSU that looks like a rat's nest with all the spare cables coming out of it! I'm hanging on for THAT card now!

  3. I've read a lot of reviews. It looks like a pretty high standard set for ATI when they come with their card at the end of this month.
I have links to all the reviews that I know about, should I post the links?

Me thinks my 5900 will do me just fine for a few years yet. Looks neat though, if only I had the money to keep up with the latest and greatest. I'd have a new comp every week!

  5. Well, actually if you buy stuff at compusa they offer replacement plans (TAP) which you can put on video cards or just about whatever. For any reason you can return it and they give you that same card off the shelf.
    Here's the spoiler.
Cards update every 6 months or at least once a year. They won't have that 9800Pro you bought last year for 400$ but they will give you this years 400$ card in place.

the power supply thing is interesting - but methinks just a marketing gimmick. all the PSU's i've looked inside have their power cabling all connected up to the same track on the PCB - all the power is coming from the same place, just coming down different cables. the cables themselves can easily withstand the current drawn. it's just a stunt to make people (like us!!) gasp. i was more impressed seeing 90FPS in UT2004 at 1600X1200 with FSAA and AT filtering!

  7. But when you've seen a few gens of gfx cards come and go then you just yawn! too expensive, too hot and too power hungry... they'll be next years mx400 ..$32.00

The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons.

yeah, i remember spending a hundred something pounds on a brand new TWELVE MEG voodoo2 card. it was fantastic, games on my P75 could just fly...

I'm quite impressed with the latest designs though, more transistors than a P4! hopefully by the time RAM and CPUs catch up with the graphics guys the cards will be less power hungry, i mean 100watts for your CPU and 100watts for your graphics card? where will it all end?!

Ah the memories. I went all out and spent over $3000 to build a P2 350MHz with a voodoo2. That thing would outrun The Flash! Well if it had legs that is.

It lasted me for 3 1/2 years before it was finally retired. Now it's used by my parents for their general computing (internet, email, documents, etc...) but still is kicking.

My Jaw dropped when I first saw the specs on this card, but I do not plan on buying it. Mostly because I just bought a 9800Pro (got a fantastic deal buy a refub), but even if I hadn't, I would have waited. There will be a bum rush on buying them because of the hype. I would wait til a "value edition" comes and ATI has a competitor in the market. That should stabilize the cost.
