i've tried tdk -/+R, memorex -RW, and ridata g04 -R. none of them work in xbox. only in my ps2, all dvd drives, dvd players. i used dvd decryptor and then dvd shrink for most of the movies. even the ones i made when i didnt use those programs wouldnt work in the xbox. i've gotten 2 dvds to run in the xbox. 1 ran and got me happy but when menu came up it froze and never started again. the other worked only 1 time.
what media should i use or what method should i use while making the movies to make them play in the xbox? NOT games.

You must have a Thompson Drive, they are very picky about the media they will play. There is lots info over at xbox-scene about what media works best in the Thompson drive.
I have had great success using DVD-R's of various brands, some cheap, some not and nero express-copyDVD files from Hard Drive mode, but my XBox DVD drive is a samsung.

I read something once about xbox and different drives they put in them over the time they been produced, some are from philips and so on and so on. My xbox is not chipped but plays everything i tried of burned DVD media, but cdr and cdrw is not working, and was never ment to work in xbox. Maybe yours is from a "unfortunate" batch.
(edit) About type of media to use, look it up in the DVD players compatibility list. For me everything has worked so cant list it here =) -
I use NERO 5.5.10.56 to burn DVDs and found out about this option just recently (having the same problems-no playback on XBOX):
I believe my XBOX has a Philips drive. Since this was pointed out to me, I have burned all my DVDs this way-not a problem-yet...
just a thought

We have a software hack on ours that enables burnt games to be played without a chip. It has the Phoenix bios on it.
you can use XBMP. Just unzip and ftp the folder to your apps folder probably on the E:drive. It might even already be on there depending on what dash and exploits you used.

The info about the tompson, phillips, samsung is correct. Which is most likely will vary depending on exactly WHEN you xbox was purchased.
Bought an xbox this week when the price dropped, I think (THANKFULLY) the Samsung drive is now the most common. Either what thats what I got so woohoo. -

Quick question, have the people who had DVD-R xbox issues tried testing Record Now Max? It hasn't failed me yet, but I've not got the play back kit for my xbox yet, so I haven't been able to test.

What drives is in the early xboxes? I bought mine when xbox was still new and hot, 2 days after the first big price drop. And how can i check what drive i have?
-
Still could be any of the three. Look here, among other places for info

Ritek G04 @ 4x or Naked Geeks @ 6x, both are Minus.

Thanks for the link Flaystus. It said there that the early ones was Thompson, then Phillips and Samsung in the newer, i didnt realy have to check it then, but i had a look to confirm, its Thompson ok. Old is best

Rather or not new Xboxs still can come with a Thompson drive is actually been contridicted in several places that I have checked. My understand is that there are still a few made with them, but that now they are the vast Minority of consoles.
On a side note, maybe I missed something, but your HAPPY to have a Thompson? -
just my two cents on this matter, but i believe it was first the thompson, then the phillips drive, and finally the samsung. but becareful cause for many months now microsoft has stopped putting samsung drives into their xbox's to cut down on cost. they are now back using the phillips drive. i had a phillips dvd rom drive on mine so i had to go to ebay and purchase a xbox samsung dvd drive for around 50 bucks. when i had my phillips dvd rom in my xbox i could play all type of dvd-r brands without any problems but no audio cds, 'till i switched to my new samsung drive. now i can play both cd-r and dvd+r, dvd-r

Thats exact same reason that some have 8gb and some 10gb HDDs in theirs. -
Get this. My Girlfriend got an Xbox, she got a Samsung laser. My uncle got a Xbox, samsung laser. My two mates Got a Samsung laser as did my nephew. I got a s*** generic. I then went to Argos to get another one to change the laser out as everyone was getting samsungs, the Argos one had a Thommo so I changed it with my Generic. I took it back then with the Generic in and they lifted the pads and said "its been tampered with!!!!" I took it to another Argos and they said the same. By this time im sure I was getting my picture emailed around the UK to all the frigging Argos stores!
I sold that Xbox and used my orignal one with the new thommy laser in. Then when the Limited Green one came out I sold my orignal and preyed for a Samsung with the green one, like with everyone getting one and the Argos crap, I deserved one. Nope, didnt get one.
I think if I went and brought a 100, id still never get a Samsung.

Yes Flaystus, im happier than any phillips-xbox owner. Ok, CD-R dont work in mine, but all kind of DVD media worked so far. As i said in the first post to this thread, i have an unchipped box, original software too. I got no use for CD-R support, my games are all originals so what more do i need? Its for sure better than the philips type, the samsung got just things i never needed, so would be no gain for me with samsung and big loss with Phillips, so YES im happy to have thompson.

I got an xbox right after the xmas season when they first came out (must have been after xmas 2001). I have no idea what it is, but it plays dvd+/-r perfectly but no cdr. I'm very happy with it.

Thanks shelbyGT, for confirming my experience with early xboxes. Mine was bought around the same time, a little earlier maybe. Seems like the first ones with thompson was different than the newer ones. I wasnt aware of the thompson models having bad reputation, am surprised to read other peoples experience with it. My theory is that the early models was too good, heheh. Was expensive that time, and not as much as a game included, so the first thompsondrive was too good, high-end for sure
Shelby, our xboxes will become collectors items soon, dont sell it too cheap. i will consider to retire after i sold it -
If only they were numbered, I'm sure mine was somewhere in the top batch (damn 300 dollar price tag!)
-
I paid NOK 2800 for mine (without game and vdv playback kit). With the exchangerate back then it should be between 350 and 400 USD. The week before the price was NOK 4000 and up. Didnt think it was so expensive back then, all good DVD players was higher than that.

well i have the phillips. cd r never worked. cd rws work which is good. no DVDs at all cept for dvd roms.
(BTW, i own ninja gaiden. i luv that game to death. if u know a site that will teach me how to back it up plz let me know.)
i heard from ppl on this site that NERO made bad DVDs. any truth to this? DVD shrink uses nero to burn my DVDs. ima go try a DVD decryptor movie i made. is that NERO button on NERO 6.xxx??? -

If in doubt, Google it. -
Not sure what UDF stood for myself, just that it worked...
Got the following "definition":
Short for Universal Disk Format, a universal vendor-independent file system for optical media designed for data interchange and portability, allowing an operating system to read, write and modify data stored on optical media that was created by another operating system.
DVDs are based on the UDF format and CD-R and CD-RW disks use UDF as an optional second standard.
UDF, defined by the Optical Technology Storage Association (OTSA), is a subset of ISO 13346, an interchange standard for non-sequential recording of data.
Seems that my XBOX is just as picky about not playing DVDs burned any other way as my Philips standalone is about DVDs that are less than 4GB. (It just says "no disc")
