  1. I converted an avi to an mpg and the size increased dramatically from about 40mb to over 300mb. Is there any way to compress the mpg or to encode it some other way so it isn't as big. I use TMPGEnc. Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Normally no.
You must ask yourself - why did you convert the 30MB AVI to a MPG?
most likely the answer is to put it on a Video CD
in this case the file is correct.

  3. i've tried myself lasttime when i converted a cinepak-AVI to MPG.. it becomes much more bigger than source..

in my opinion, these r somethings we have to note
    1. make sure the avi is not DivX..
    2. check the bitrate in TMPGEnc settings. what settings u use? pal, ntsc? vcd, svcd? or custom settings? in my case, i (without knowing) use custom setting. I maxed out all the variables settings for the mpg (in hope the mpg will look much better). but certainly i'm wrong... i suggest u use the default setting templates...

mm.. hope i don't go wrong here.. correct me please... i'm a newbie..
    thanks...
