Hey guys, total newbie here. Hope this is the right forum.
I captured and edited a TV episode with Windows Movie Maker 2 using a Canopus ADVC-50, then saved it as .avi. Running time shows as 43 minutes and 22 seconds (43:22) when I check its properties in WMM2 and its AVI Header in Virtual Dub. However, when I drag it into Cinema Craft Encoder SP (2.67) for encoding, running time shows as 43:20 (2 seconds shorter).
I demuxed the clip anyway into DVD-compliant .m2v (MPEG-2) and uncompressed PCM .wav using ES VBR multi-pass. However, the resulting m2v clip runs 43:20, as stated in CCE, but the audio .wav runs 43:22, the same length as the original video.
The frame rate of the original .avi is 29.97, which is what CCE is set to (not 30fps).
I tried frameserving from VirtualDub to CCE, but CCE still insists that the video.avi.vdr file that I'm using as a handler is only 43:20 long. I also tried using AviScript/Synth, but had the same problem.
Are there settings I'm overlooking, or is this a non-issue that will correct itself when I author my DVD (using DVD-lab)? I got the Canopus because of its locked audio/video sync, and I refuse to lose sync when I finally author!
BTW, DVD-lab's asset bin also shows the .m2v file as being 43:20 and the .wav as 43:22. I'm also using the Panasonic codec for the .avi, because VirtualDub and AviSynth refused to open it otherwise (that was a whole 'nother pain in the @$$).
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

drop frame vs. non drop frame would make up that diff.
Dv is drop frame - you are prob. have setting on NDF"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
Hi BJ_M,
Thanks for the note! I'm at work right now, but I will double-check the settings when I get home and let you know.
Thanks! -
Hi BJ_M,
Okay, I double-check my CCE settings and the DF (Drop-Frame) box is NOT checked! Thanks for the pointer. I will try another encode and update!
Thanks! -

Hi BJ_M,
Okay, I downloaded the two proggies, but there doesn't seem to be an option for Non-Drop-Frame to Drop-Frame conversion, just 2:3 Pulldown. I don't think that's the same thing, though. Is there an option I'm overlooking?
And also, how do you quote previous messages? Can't seem to figure that out either... :P
Thanks! -
these two options as shown should be checked
as for quoting - look in upper right hand corner of each post for a slew of options"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
Hi, BJ_M,
Thanks for the note! I didn't have the drop-frame option because I originally had the wrong version. Beta worked like a charm!

If you want, I can send you a copy of the DVD when it's done (first two eps of the wonderful "Wonderfalls" -- off-air though, not DVD-rips) as a thank-you. Sorry, no cash-value substitutes. -
First Aired March 2004
Last Aired April 2004
Status Canceled/Ended (13 episodes produced, 9 remain unaired)
are they going to even show the rest of the episodes?
it started with very strong ratings - has great reviews - big user support and rating went way down once and fox bailed ....
fox wants reality shows only -- cheap to produce --"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
Unfortunately, Fox (the network) won't be airing the rest of the eps, but Fox (the studio) will be shopping it to other nets. The show did extremely well in Canada, but only so-so in the States. When it premiered it actually performed worse than "Boston Public," which it replaced, and ratings slid as Fox shuffled it to Thursday (against "CSI" and "The Apprentice").
Weird how a company can feel no remorse burying a show (called the "best new show of the season" by more than one critic, no less) that they produced themselves. Hopefully, Bravo will pull a "Keen Eddie" and pick up the rest of the eps.
DVD screeners of two unaired eps are running about $100 on eBay, so the show, like Tim Minear's "Angel" and "Firefly," definitely has a devoted (if small) following. And that wax lion is easily going for twice that....
