    Hi UTDKING,

DVD format is MPEG2, see the blue "DVDR" link, top left of this page for the specs.

"best" is subjective, so someone's "best" might not be someone else's. However, the popular ones I regularly see on this site are (in no particular order):

    TMPGEnc
    Cinema Craft Encoder
    Mainconcept MPEG Encoder
    Canopus Procoder

    There are others...

    Hope that helps.
There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.

    Carpe diem.

If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much room.

I guess that depends on what you mean by "best". Here's what I use to get DVDs out of the video footage from my camcorder (Sony D8) :

WinDV (to transfer AVI from camcorder to computer)
VirtualDub and Panasonic DV codec (to edit the AVI if needed)
TMPGenc DVD source creator to encode AVI to MPEG2
TMPG DVD Author to author the DVD
NERO 6 to burn the DVD

All of this works fine for me, no problems, a/v sync is fine etc, so it's "best" for me becuse it's so easy to do, and costs so little. Possibly there are other combinations of tools that may yield "better" final results, I don't know; but since I'm a beginner at this sort of thing, ease of use is important to me.

  4. In my case, using Premiere to import DV for editing. Frameserve to Tmpgenc for conversion and finally Maestro for the menu.
There are other ways you can achieve the above, eg using Pinnacle Studio 9 which is a program that is able to import DV, edit and create a menu for burning onto a DVD. Athough from what I hear Studio 9 is pretty unstable at times.
