  1. I cant find a tool to convert my avi video file to mpeg as I want to watch it on my computer but it doesnt support avi.

I tried avi2mpg1 tool but its a command line tool and too complicated for me. What freeware tool is available to do this?

  2. It would be easier and faster for you to download the right codec to play the avi. (DivX, Xvid, ffdshow, Nimo code pack, etc.....)

I use EO Video to convert avi's to mpg.

If your computer can't play avi's, then somethings busted. Avi's are native to all microsoft OS's. You'll need to download a codecs pack - I recommend 'The Codecs' pack at:

Mpeg is a 'Final' format primarily designed for playing on hardware players, not needed if you're just playing it on your computer. Best freeware tool for avi to mpeg most definitely TMPGEnc - professional quality. Available here:

Luke 23 -don't do it like that.

Codec packs are not he way to go they can cause conflicts.

There are many different types of AVI file ( DivX Xvid etc) I don't know what type you have so you need a programme to identify what you have.
Go get Gspot or AVICodec either of these will identify what sort of AVAI you have.

If it is Divx go get the latest Divx codec , If it is Xvid go get the Xvid codec , all these things are available free via the tools section on this site.

If your clip plays then carry on using your PC and if you come across another in the future that wont play get the codec for that etc.

What you will find is that with vary few additional codecs you can play most types of AVI out there.

Codec Packs can cause as many problems as they solve.

Once you gat the AVI to play in media player or whatever then you can start thinking about 'encoding the AVI to Mpeg . TMPGenc is probably the easiest for a newbie and there are many good easy guides for it.
