  1. I have a DVD given to me with home video on it on a burnt disc. I'm putting together a little movie with Windows Movie Maker. What's the easiest way to go about this?

I would use TMPGEnc DVD Author to rip/convert the VOB to an MPEG2 file. Movie Maker should be happy with this file.

Personally I wouldn't go this way, as WMM has a known issue with opening MPEG-2 files.

https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1353035&highlight=high+quality+video#1353035 pretty much spells out how I'd go about it.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I haven't experienced any problems yet, but that's good to know. Thanks.

    Interesting ...

I was under the belief that you couldn't use MPEG-2 at all, from what I'd read.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q308464/

Note The MPEG2 format has several codecs that are not supported by Windows Movie Maker. Even if you have downloaded and installed these codecs on your computer, files in the MPEG2 format may not work in Windows Movie Maker or may cause other problems. Converting the MPEG2 format to another compatible format may work for most MPEG2 files. However, some MPEG2 codecs include copy protection schemes that will prevent you from converting the file.
Seems to say that it may or may not work
    If in doubt, Google it.

  6. I would give mpeg video wizard a try..I've used it numerous times to make music video and it works great.
