    Hello,

How can i convert my home made dvd(widescreen 720x576 PAL) to divx.
I try it with some progs, but after conversion i get a divx file, with 2 black bars under and above the movie, but is it also possible to convert without black bars??
What program is the best to do this and what is the best output format(resolution for divx) ??
    Thanks!!

EDit; I try it on a widescreen tv, and there are small black borders left and right, but is in not possible to play divx on the entire screen without black bars?
When i play the file on the pc, there are black bars under and above movie.

    What tools have you tried?

AutoGK, FairUse Wizard or avi.net should be able to automatically crop your video.

  3. Most widescreen computer monitors are 16:10. Widescreen TVs are 16:9.

A 16:9 movie should play with black bars top/bottom on a computer monitor because the computer monitor is taller than the movie.

Many movies are wider than 16:9. These should display with black bars top/bottom on a widescreen TV and a widescreen computer monitor.

DVD only supports 4:3 and 16:9 DAR. Any movie that is not one of those aspect ratios will be encoded with black bars as part of the frame keep the movie at the correct aspect ratio. So a 2.25:1 movie (~16:7) encoded at 16:9 will have black bars at the top and bottom of the 720x576 frame. A 1.5:1 movie encoded as 16:9 will have black bars on the left and right of the 720x576 frame.

Note that the 720x576 frame size used on PAL DVDs is neither 4:3 nor 16:9. It's the DAR setting that specifies the relative dimenensions (including any black bars within the frame) the video should be displayed at.

Black bars encoded in the frame don't consume much bitrate so it's not really necessary to remove them.

    Ok, thanks for the answer.
What is the best output resolution for DIVX when converting a 720x576(Pal) mpeg-2 file?
So that a widescreen tv have no blackbars??

It's not a resolution issue. Widescreen PAL 16:9 is 640 x 368 1:1 PAR for maximum compatibility with Divx players, however if the DVD is wider than 16:9 (and most movies are) then you have to manually resize it to fill the space before encoding, and lose the image off the ends.

Let AutoGK do it's thing and correctly crop and encode. If you get black bars on playback, use the zoom function on oyur player or TV to fill the screen. That way, if you one day come to your senses and realise that by zooming in you actually see less, and not more, you don't have to encode them all over again.

  6. If you want to use square pixel encoding and want to preserve a little more resolution try 720x400 or 704x400.

Or you could try leaving the frame at 720x576 and use the DAR flag to specify 16:9 DAR. Not all players respect the DAR flag so you'll have to test it on your player.

Keep in mind that larger frame sizes will require more bitrate.

You didn't say how you're creating the AVIs. If the AVIs were created properly, those black bars are being added by your player during playback, and aren't encoded with the video itself. To confirm (or disprove), open the AVI in VDub(Mod). If you don't see black bars, they weren't encoded into the video.

Your posts about wanting to watch the AVIs on your TV set without black bars are just plain silly.

I was just wandering why a widescreen DVD, no blackbars, is not the same after conversion when toy watch them on TV.
    Thanks for the answers.
