  1. when ripping a dvd to DIVX format what is the best way to do it and get the movie on 1 disc where it looks good. 1200kbps??
i'm using DVDMagic. it's a program where i pop the dvd in my drive and pick whether to convert to VCD,SVCD, or Divx. It lets me choose my compression level for DIVX, but it uses it's own compression for vcd and svcd(which is fine with me, cuz they come out near dvd quality).
i just need to know how to make a decent Divx dvd rip, so i can play it in my dvd player that supports Divx. any help would be appreciated.

If you want simplicity, Dr.DivX is very user friendly. You can let it decide for you what bitrate to use, by setting the size of the CD (700 mb) and it will do the calculation and conversion. I've used it to convert some old DivX 3.11 files to DivX 5.1 so they'll play in my LiteOn Standalone player.

It also has advanced conversion adjustments, if you want to play with how it encodes. Has a free trial if you want to check it out. There are other ways and other programs to rip to DivX, this just happens to be among the easier methods, with a wizard interface or user defined settings.

If you try using a bitrate of 1200kbps you won't be able to fit more than 74 minutes on one cd(using 96kbps audio). Dr. Divx is a fine little program but it doesn't rip DVD's. Personally, I would spread any movie longer than 90 minutes over 2 cd's. At least that way you can use higher video and audio bitrates. Higher bitrate = higher quality.
