  1. Hi!

I`m kinda new to the backup world, but let me explain the problem 2 u:
I did some (aparently) nice backups of my movies using my LG 4081 burner, Princo discs, Nero Recode & DVDCopy and labeled (don't hate me for that)
Everything was fine and nice till I decided to *really* watch a movie till the END. (till then, I had only checked some chapters of DVD-R to see if everything was nice)

So, near the end of one of my movies, a lot of pixelation came and then a big freezing. I was shocked cause it was looking real good. But okay.
My first thought: "alright, they're right! Princo is CRAP! Gonna throw this on the garbage".
BUT today, when I selected this same chapter and watched the movie till the end....NOTHING happened. It was good as my original!!

I already had some problems with my Sony Player with skipping on DVDs (kinda rare) and VCDs (happens a lot..) so I'm leaving the answer to you: what the HECK is going on? I mean. Now I know Princo are crap, won't buy this anymore.... but this discs really seems to work... at least most of the time.

but the main question is: if it's really A DISC ERROR caused by BAD media...wouldn't the problem still be there on the same spot next day???

or maybe the heat of the disc (first day I watched the full disc) caused the freezing??

please give me any tips on this... I KNOW I got a cheap media, that's not the answer I want... I wanna know if this problem COULD be any other thing...cause next day I got no problems

    thanx

  2. I've got a feeling you are going to get responses related to the label along the lines of the heat affecting the glue (etc., etc.)
No, I'm from Iowa. I only work in outer space.

  3. yeah, maybe it is...I really gotta watch the other movies "all the way" till the end!

but I'd like some tips on what could be the problem and if a media problem would act like this (faulty one day, working fine another day)

  4. Last week I asked a similar question related to errors occurring AFTER the fact. Here was the response.

I have that on occasion and I think it is due to the heat of the DVD player. It only seems to happen (very infrequently I might add) when I've had the DVD player going for 3 hours or more, and isn't limited to the same movie each time. So I think it might jest be the dvd player overheating.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  6. Are you using full-faced, stick-on labels? If you are, then I agree the problem is overheating due to the added weight and wobble....adhesive labels were nothing but problems for me on all my players.

  7. thanx ppl!

yes, they cover all the up-face of the DVD...

I'm gonna try to take the sticker out and see what happens when I play!

I'll let you know the results... but even so, it's quite impressing the problem could be with the labels...wonder HOW sensitive can DVD lasers be??!!!

  8. Just to rule out the possibility of it being bad media, Id take the time to backup the film again, only this time - shrink the output movie to about 4.2gig... That's usually what I do (as many other on this board) to compensate for cheap media. Usually have no problems burning on cheapo's after doing this.

  9. Hey!

I've taken the label off, washed and...at first play it didn't work...said the disc was dirty. Then I dried the disc and put the disc again and let it play all-movie-long!
Surprise.... coincidence or not, it worked!!!!

Tomorrow I'm gonna do the same thing to another movie that's giving me problems...and tell u about what happened.

Anyway, I'm kinda disappointed... I'd love to label my discs, and I'm certainly not rich enough to have a dvd-printer (they arent even available around here...)

MAYBE if I try to burn with better media like RITEK I could label them with no worries????

    gimme a hint here, please

It can be both, media and DVD player. Your player may not like Princos.
If this happens with Princos only try avoiding anything that may further degrade playback like labels (at this high RPM it is easy to make disk wobble). In any case what happens to you means that your player cannot lock in on the track. Try better media (different) and watch your player for playback flaws. It may be laser pickup tracking mechanism as well.

  11. thanx! gonna do that!

I`ll buy some Riteks and see what happens...

anyway, about the laser-track thing on my Sony....what should I do?
I really think my player is kinda picky, anyway...after some time playing VCDs it does the same thing to the video (well, I label my VCDs too...so....) and even happened with commercial DVDs (rare, but it did).

Is there something I can do about it? fix or anything? or is this a player characteristic problem?

If under warranty I would not hesitate to have pickup replaced. If after the warranty go for a new player. Pickups are ca. 50 bucks + labor.
Btw. this is typical, player is more end more picky and then hardly plays anything, it happened to me - bad pickup.
