  1. Hi there,

I have read that in order to capture uncompressed video, your hard drive should have a speed of 23 MB/s .

    MY QUESTIONS :

    1) Is this a read spead or a write spead ?

    2) Which should I prefer : The WD1000BB (100GB) or two WD800BB (80 GB) in a RAID-0 stripe using the FastTrack TX4 ?

    Thx in advacne.

CAPTURE !!!!!!!!! - then it is write speed .........

    NTSC full screen format

    640 * 480 * 24 bit color = 7.37 Mbits/frame * 30 frames/sec = 221.1 Mbits/sec = 27.6 Mbytes/sec SUSTAINED write speeds

NOTE : drive write speed will slow down as it fills due to rotational speed differences and possible heat problems. Some drives perform recalibration tasks to realign themselves as they heat up.

100Gb sitz what the hell video are you doing???
    2 80Gb Raided is only 80Gb
If running win2K you can run it's 'software' RAID

A good ATA100 single drive should achieve 30GB+/sec writes for 90% of the disk.

  3. Well, just for your info, two 80 GB disks in a RAID-0 array result in an 160 GB space.

And, BTW, you'll find that if you wanna do uncompressed video capture or even Huffy with a lot of post-capture editing, then 100 GB isn't enough.

  4. i would go for the raid0 array... if you got the money for two fast huge drives... that would be the shit! and what he said before..

    640 * 480 * 24 bit color = 7.37 Mbits/frame * 30 frames/sec = 221.1 Mbits/sec = 27.6 Mbytes/sec SUSTAINED write speeds

...if that is true then a raid0 array should take care of it cause a friend of mine has a raid0 array with two ata100 7200rpm drives and it benchmarks with HDtach well over 30mb/s. and you would have 160 gig to capture too... sounds like your best option without goin scsi.

    OOps my err.
Was writing with one brain shutdown.

Raid 0 will only make use of smallest of 2 different sized drives.

    100Gb + 40Gb = eff 80Gb

    RIGHT !..................yawn . nightnight

  6. yes, that is true... it will only use double the smallest size and also the slowest speed... if you have an ata100 drive and a ata66... your raid array will operate at ata66.

  7. If your spending that kind of money sod it and go SCSI. 2 RAID 10,000rpms ???? Should suit you fine.
