I tried to encode a couple of quicktime .mov files to mpeg4 .avi with mp3 sound. I'm using ffmpegx 0.0.9a.
After the encoding process is complete, the created .avi file has great video qualitiy but no sound!
I tried to encode the sound seperatly, but ffmpegX says "audio codec not found" or something. When i encode a .mpg file, there's no problem with the sound.
How is it possible to encode a .mov file to a mpeg4 .avi with sound?

Ok, i found out that encoding to a SVCD isn't a problem. Video and sound quality are quite good.
But why isn't it possible to encode the .mov file to divx (mpeg4 video/mp3 audio) with sound?
    What am i doing wrong?

  3. Post some more information about your input file.

Quicktime gives me the following information.

    Video : mpeg-4 video 16,7mio colers 752x576
    Audio : ulaw 2:1 stereo 32000Hz
    Framerate :25fps

    It's a Quicktime .mov file.

  5. Play your avi divx with ffmpegX "Play", does it have sound?

    No, has no sound!
The file i tried to encode is a QT .mov file witch was captured from my TV-card. It is possible to create a SVCD with ffmpegx, but only when i select "decode with QT". The problem with no sound only apears when i try to encode with the "ffmpegx" or "mencoder" codecs.
I just want to capture my old VHS tapes and then transcode them to divx .avi's using ffmpegx. The only problem is, the encoded .avi file's have no sound.

  7. Possibly your input file has audio in a format not recognized by mencoder. Try to convert the audio track to MP3 by using Quicktime Player (or to WAV, then go from WAV to MP3 by using ffmpegX) and then use an AVI muxer to combine AVI with no audio and MP3.

Yes, now it works. Perfect mpeg4 .avi file with mp3 sound. It would be great, to include this AVI tool in ffmpegx. Or even better: make ffmpegx to work with these kind of .mov files in a future release. Thanks a lot for your great app and even greater support Major.

It can also be that the sound from your movie is on the wrong channel.

With the 5sec preview, try different audio track inputs and see if that fixes things.

Yes you're right! I found the sound on channel 1, but it's in an extreme bad quality. But that's no problem anymore, thanks to Major's hints.
For some reason it's not possible to encode the the .mov file with the ffmpeg engines. You must chose mencoder engine or mpeg2enc engine. When you use the mpeg2enc engine then you must chose "decode with QT", otherwise it won't work either ("decode with MP" doesen't work!)
