  3. Depends. If you want subtitles printed on every frame, then yes, you can just frameserve it...

If you want sub-titles you can turn on and off, you must use SVCD, and you must use I-author to make SVCD's. I-author has been discontinued, but it's available at VCDspain. Of course, I can't link to it for obvious reasons.

You can use Sub-rip to rip DVD subtitles to I-author format.

The nasty bit is that I-author is an extremely powerful, flexible, professional tool. That is, it's difficult to use and automates almost nothing. Think about it, if you're a professional, you have plenty of time to waste on making menus exactly right.

Using subtitles is easy. Use sub-rip to rip'em. Use I-author's multiplexing utility to put them into the stream.

Using I-author is the nasty bit. You can't do chapters with Nero, you can't fast-forward on Nero CD's, and no other program will accept the MPEG with inserted subtitles.

Really, I-author is great, it's just too much damn trouble.

  7. I have the same question. Please help us both. I ripped a DVD with smartripper, en then used DVD2AVI so I'm as far as Cholm.
I too want subtitles on every frame. So let me know how. I have a version of VirtualDub, but I'm not able to figure out how to rip the subtitles with it. (it's not the latest version). Can I still encode it in MPEG with TMPEG? Or does VirtualDub take care of the encoding as well?
    Let us know

Convert the d2v file with VFAPI to a "fake" avi and open that in VirtualDub. Add the subtitler(Avery Lee) or vobsub(Gabest) filter and start the frameserver. Load the .vdr file in TMPG as video source.
Please read the FAQ's and "how to.." sections. There you'll see, where to get the tools and how to work with them. It is too much to echo everything on the forum.
If you don't find some guides/tools here, ask again for links.

  9. It seem to be a very kompleks proces. I also use DVDx, and in this program i can just choose which subtitle i want to have in my MPG movie.

No, once you got it, it is pretty easy. In vobsub I can configure height, width, colour of the subs and I can define the place, where the subs should appear. Very flexible. Also I am free to decide which encoder I use.
Sorry, I don't know anything about DVDx.
