I'm wondering of the sleuth that are out there right now, if any have the ability to BURN and free up your pc (background) so that one doesn't have to stop and wait while the burn is going.
Thanks

So then, the anwser is no?
I thought that I might have read that the plextor support some sort of background burning....
It's not that big of a deal, was just wondering if it exists yet and if/and when we'll see more TCQ controller cards, devices out.
TCQ=Tagged Control Que, ie., similar to what SCSI does and used on newer Serial Harddrives (10,ooo rpm)... -
Not sure if this is what you want, but you can get quite reliable burning while doing other tasks, as long as you set up your PC correctly. You might need a decent CPU (my Athlon XP 2000+ works fine).
I have a DVDROM on one dedicated IDE channel, a DVDR drive on another dedicated IDE channel (on a PCI expansion card), and two hard drives on a third IDE channel.
I keep a dedicated partition for DVD images (to avoid fragmentation) on the secondary drive, so I can burn a DVD and thrash the primary hard drive at the same time. I can even rip a DVD image to one hard drive and burn from the other simultaneously.
If you run a CPU-intensive task you can decrease its priority so that it does not interfere with the burning software. -
You know I have played games while my Sony DVD burner is burning. This is another reason I liked the 8meg cache.

I have a Plextor 708A and burn dvds while I capture from my digital cable box and surf the net all at the same time. I haven't heard about plextor having support in the background while burning. It would also depend what type of programs you're running in the background while you're burning. I've left my antivirus and firewall program on while doing dvd burning, capturing and surfing the net with no problems at all.
I agree with ztank that it depends on your CPU and how your pc is internally set up. I have 2 hard drives on my primary IDE, dvdrom & dvd burner on secondary IDE and a cdrw on primary master on a PCI IDE controller card. -
Build a second PC and use a KVM switch

I suggest you buy a burner that employs burn-proof technology or similar, and make sure you have at least 512MB RAM.
I have a NEC ND1300 A with only 2MB cache -without burnproof, and 512MB RAM, and can run apps like photoshop or launch AOL while burning. I have not tried playing UT or HAlf-Life while burning, Im certain that would be pushing it too far. -
In strict "Microsoft Windows" terms, any 32-bit app can do thing simultaneously with other 32-bit (even 16-bit, MS claims) apps.
But we all know well that this is never 100% true.
However, with the new Intel P4 HT CPU, you should be able to do that just fine. (I have not yet tested this because I am not going to buy another PC for the next few months) -
Well I can't seem to do that. Even with my Sony CDR 48x, it was the same thing, slow everything when burning.
I have a Athlon XP 2600, 1 gig of RAM. Windows XP Pro.
My boot drive is on a Promise Ultra TX PC133 card, with a 2nd HD as slave, slot two (2) on the card, hold hard drive 3 (master) HD 4 slave.
My Liteonit 8X DVD Burner is set on master IDE 1 on the motherboard, DMA enabled, (only goes up to DMA 2), and I'm pretty sure that putting the burner on the control card and having the boot HD on the motherboard would make little difference as this is how the CDR set up was, and my system still came to a crawl when burning.
The only "other" thing that it could be is that perhaps the AGP slot is sharing the PCI slot with the controller card, bu that is hardly unlikly as I never have any other problems.
any other suggestions? -
Sticking my oar in the water...
Sony DRU 500a
I burn, surf the web, and run TMPGenc encoding at the same time. The only thing I avoid is file transfers from the drive I'm burning off of. P$ w/HT & ! Gig ram.
At work 8X I/O Magic (BTC, but was only $89, no rebate needed) .. Athlon 1200 Mhz, 284 MB Ram. I surf, Burn, Download updates (Vrus, Adware) at the same time.
The only time I've coastered has been my fault or a power blip, When I found out that UPS had gone bad.
Cheers -
Yeah, no idea why this is happening....
just checked the manual to be sure (motherboard) and AGP shares slot 1 (which is empty), and in control panel/system, I checked view devices by connection and all have their own IRQ ..
I included a snap shot just in case....

Let me know what you think it could be...
thanks -
Make sure you have busmastering on. By the way the Hyperthreading question is true also. However, I just got my HT processor last week. I have been burning and playing since the first month the Sony DRU500a was released. No problems with burning and playing.

My system PCI slot 3 was sharing with on-board audio, although I had it turned off in the bios, it was still showing up in control panel/system...
I disabled it then did a test burn, was able to surf the net and play unreal 2004 demo which only stopped once for a second...
the problem though, is although it is disabled in control panel, I'm wondering if it will re-install when I reboot.
Lastly, is there a way to check a burned DVD to see if there are any errors??
My liteon impresses me more and more...
thanks
