  1. I am trying to convert a .vob to an xvid for editing. I can convert the vob ok, and I get an xvid. The xvid plays fine in QT. However, after I edit the file, and delete some scenes and save as a .mov,QT cannot play the resulkting .mov file, and QT quits. Any hints on why this happens, and what to do about it?

    thanks

  2. hmmm...no one has any insights? I think this used to work, could it have anything to do with bitrates (about 2000) or having upgraded to QT 6.5?

No idea at all. Sorry. Maybe if you used a codec that wasn't XviD?
If it isn't broken, take it apart and find out why.

  4. I'm using the ffmpeg encoder. The created avi plays fine. It's when I go to edit it, cut stuff, and then resave that is the problem. It also happened with an mpeg4. It must be quicktime. Nice upgrade, thanks Apple.

This worked for you before upgrading to 6.5?

Which codec are you using in QTpro, to import XivD? I've only tried DivX and 3vix. Divx would try to convert Xvid - problems, while 3vix would appear to import it natively - no problems.

Did you install/re-install the latest version of the import/export codec after upgrading to QT6.5?

I have done similar ".avi" editing in QT6.5, previously - and it was slow as heck on my Dual 450, with such large files!

I seem to recall one problem was when it came time to save. If I chose save as movie - it wold change the file extension to ".mov" If I chose save as source, it would leave the ".avi" extension.

Hav you tried saving both ways, after editing?

  6. In QT, I'm not sure what I'm using for codecs. I'm not importing the file, just palying it. this also happened when I used ffmpeg to convert to mpeg4 using the ffmpeg encoders.

As far as i can remember, I used to be able to edit and resave avi's as .movs, and they worked fine. Could it be using too high a bitrate? I will try to reinstall QT 6.3 and see if it works.

I think I have posted this several times before, but
    here we go again:

Do not use XVID out of ffmpegX if you need to edit.
You need to use MPEG-4(AVI) using mencoder.

    Go back to ffmpegx,
    convert the .vob to MPEG-4(AVI)[mencoder]
take the resulting .avi, process through Divx Doctor II.
Take the resulting QT Movie, edit it as necessary.
Save the file in the format you need, using a good codec
such as sorenson or 3ivx. ( I reccomend 3ivx, search for
my other posts on encoding in 3ivx for HQ settings.)

I have tried the xivd option from ffmpegx, and since it
makes its own proprietary .avi "shell", QT has problems
doing anything with it, ESPECIALLY EDITING, even with
3ivx or divx 5. Better to stay safe with a codec QT likes,
and to ALWAYS make a QT MOV file, rather than try and edit
    a "shell" file like .avi.

QT will not even play any of the DivX or XviD "avi" files unless you have installed a codec - at some time in the past - since neither format follows the MPEG4 "Standard" that Apple uses.

If you have Divx Doctor, then you probably have a version of the 3viX codec installed (they make Divx Doctor).

Since I'm on a PC (at work) I can't remember the exact path to the "Library" folder which holds the files... Library/Application Support/Quicktime??

When playing the movie, you should be able to open the info window and see whixh codec is being used (Divx or 3vix) and infor on size, framerate, etc.

Since you are editing, even minor edits, you should ensure you have an updated codec.
