I am trying to convert a .asx extension file to MPEG2 format, does anyone know the process for this, what program to use, etc. It isn't an extension I usually come across.

ASX files are textual command files that manage streaming of ASF files. They are very small in size (about 1K) because they contain no data, just instructions. When a user clicks a link to an ASX file, the browser downloads it to the cache directory, launches the Windows Media Player, and then starts the streaming. The advantage of using ASX files over ASF files is their server location. ASF files can reside on different server types

So it sounds like they can't be converted because they are, for lack of a better term, a link to another source. Is that correct?

Use EO Video. It will read .asf & .wmv files. Convert to DIVX or XVID .avi and then use tmpeg to make mpeg2 for dvd

    http://www.eo-video.com/

Or just use EO Video's VCD template and burn a VCD...
