  1. I received and downloaded a video file sent to me in the following configuration-

    video.avi(1).asx 97MB
    video.avi(2).asx 97MB
    video.avi(3).asx 83MB
    video.avi.asx 97MB

I can get the video.avi.asx to open in VLC but it only plays for 10 minutes and stops. Is there a way to join these files together or get the other components to play? Many thanks!

You could try a binary joiner like http://www.jaist.ac.jp/~hoangle/filesj/ first.

If it fails then are they avi or asf files? Use mediainfo to identify.

    Try Avidemux.
If it can open the first one, do File/append and add the rest.
Then "save as" a new file.
Use "copy" for video and audio and save as the same format as it is (avi? asf?).

  4. AVI files with MPEG 4 video streams according to MediaInfo.

I can't get either one of the programs above to do anything with these files.

  5. Ok I sorted it.

    I took the following--

    video.avi(1).asx
    video.avi(2).asx
    video.avi(3).asx
    video.avi.asx

    and renamed them as follows--

    video.avi(1).rar.002
    video.avi(2).rar.003
    video.avi(3).rar.004
    video.avi.rar.001

and then played the files with VLC media player!

Now please see my Sound Forge thread in this same subforum. That one still has me befuddled!!

Rename to file.avi and try Avidemux again.

  7. @AlanHK not to seem thick but would you mind illustrating your point, i.e. rename the files in my example the way you mean?

Often the wrong suffix on a filename confuses software. So if they're really avi, try naming your files
    video.avi(1).asx
    video.avi(2).asx
    video.avi(3).asx
    video.avi.asx

    as

    video1.avi
    video2.avi
    video3.avi
    video.avi

and try opening them in Avidemux then.
The .001, .002, etc you used indicates to VLC that they should be played in sequence, the rar part is not helpful but fortunately is ignored. VLC isn't so easily fooled.
