    Hey all,

What is the difference between the 2? I have a dvd-rom here in my laptop... that will ONLY play DVDs i have burned from a "full backup" of an original DVD. It will NOT play a DVD i burned from a "reauthor" which is JUST the movie, no menus, no extras ect. I use DVD Shrink to re-encode the movies to a suitable size.

Can someone tell me why my dvd-rom will play one flawlessly, but not the other? Its a brand new drive, i am using windows media player 9 and/or Power DVD to try and view.

When i put the reauthored dvd in (the one without menus or extras), it just spins and spins and tries to read it... then if i try and view it from windows explorer it says "this disk cannot be read by windows, it may be damaged or in a format that windows does not recognise". and if i try to open it in PowerDVD it says that the DVD-Rom drive is empty.

Now if i do the exact same thing with a "full backup" dvd (which includes all the menus, extras ect), it will autoplay, play in windows media player, i can browse it in windows explorer, and i can play it in power DVD.

I use the same program (dvd shrink) to fit them to a single DVD+R, I am using the SAME media (memorex DVD+R's), i am using the same burning software (Nero 6.3 ultra) and the same ROM to try and read them

Is there a certain codec i need to play the "re authored" dvds i make? I am completely baffled as to why it will play one DVD+R which is a full backup, and not the other DVD+R which is a re-author without the menus.

That IS a wierd situation. I have a DVDRom drive that will not play self made DAO(Disc At Once) CD-R's so I guess nothing is impossible. Have you tried authoring one with a menu in TMPGEnc DVD Author? It is a 30 trial and is fairly easy to use AND there are several easy-to-follow guides on it. Maybe your DVDRom needs a menu for some reason....TMPGEnc DVD Author will give you one.

well its not only dvdshrink ive tried.
Ive tried using tmpgencoder, and tmpg dvd-author aswell. When i burn a dvd WITH menus, it plays fine in the dvd-roms.

but even with tmpg encoding, when i burn a dvd WITHOUT menus, it still wont play it.. says drive is empty

could it be a windows problem? im using winXP pro.

  9. I'll give this a shot.

When using DVD Shrink, in the options, change the region code to 1, assuming your in the U.S. or Canada.

In other words, don't remove the RCE protection, but manually select region 1.

if you reauthor try to make sure the filesize is at least 4.0G. i have had issues where dvdrs that are less than 4.0G are not recognized by the player (ie Disney movies). use a dvdrw to experiment. good luck.

That is too wierd. Thats....backwards isn't it?....not being able to read a region free disc? If you were trying to play a region 2 disc in your region 1 DVDRom I could understand it not playing it....you learn something new everyday.
