  1. Hi,

I'm trying to encode a pal vcd compliant mpg in tmpgenc from an avi file. When first encoded it the output file was 3800mb which is way too big. I was wanting 1400mb so that i can cut it and fit it on 2 discs.

Having changed the bitrate so that i became a smaller file and created the black lines at the top and bottom of the picture i then encoded the file. The problem is the output file became very very pixelated.

    Could anyone help me??

    cheers

  3. Yes, spread it over 4 discs or you'll create the worst Sub-XVCD you've ever seen.

VCD limit is roughly 700MB per disc with no variation on the standard. Anything else and you've just created an out-of-compliance disc. And to top it off, you're trying to cut the bitrate in half. Not a good thing with VCD, methinks.

That's why you see such horrible pixelation.

  4. Surely there's a way of converting it without the pixelation.

All seems very stupid if you ask me

How long (in time) is the AVI? That's the only parameter that matters. An 80 min CD can hold nearly 80 min of VCD video, that's it. VCD is already a "low end" format that at its best isn't very good (compared to its cousins SVCD and DVD). If you try to squeeze 4 CDs worth of VCD down to 2 CDs, (the only way to achieve this is by lowering the bit rate) you will get extremely bad results, no matter how stupid you think that is.
