help playing burnt movies on PSX2

hi i'm very new at this and i'm not sure what version my psx2 is but its a newer version and says in the manual it can play DVD-R/RW (video mode) DVD-R (VR mode) and DVD+R/RW. I want to be able to play burnt movies but i'm not sure if i need a boot disk or a mode chip to do this, also what format the movie would have to be in to play it (.mpg, .avi SVCD, VCD?? ect) i'm not even sure what else i need to know so anything will help, thanks

depends on the ps2 if it will play + or -. as far as playing video format, it will play copied dvd's. but not really any other format.
