Hello. I didn't know where to post this dumb question of mines since it does not relate to computer hardware nor video to VCD/DVD.

Anyway, I have two computers: A and B. I am replacing B because it is really slow and old. I will be getting a new computer that can make and copy DVDs and VCDs. I am keeping my computer A though. Anyway, I used computer A to download some movies. They're all finished downloading right now and I have 5 very large AVI files; each around 600MB. Computer A cannot make DVDs (but it can make VCDs, data discs, etc.) so I want to transfer the AVIs to the new computer. Is there a way to do this?

  2. you can put the AVI files on a CD-R/RW, make a data or backup CD, and then just transfer them over to your new computer. Or you can connect both computers together either by a network or a crossover cable then make the transfer.

    hope that helps

    alright

So if I make a data disc, I should insert the CD, copy each AVI and then paste in the new computer's folder right? How long would it take? Also, would I have to do anything to it, like change it's properties to archive instead of read-only?

  5. You shouldnt have to change anything at all to the file. And depending on how fast your system is, I would say it would take anywhere from 1-10 mins. All depends on your system.

Burning a file, copy and paste, erasing disk and doing it all over again five times shouldnt take more than an 30mins to an hour.

  6. Have you thought about connecting these 2 computers into a network?
Do they have network cards? (need crossover cable or HUB, or switch)
Do both of them have USB? (this type of cable)
Do either of them have serial ports? (use a null modem cable)
What about firewire (IEEE-1394) cable? (look here)
Last but not least what about IR ports (Infra red)

here's a decent site for networking windows http://www.wown.com/

Out of curiosity can you connect two computers via a simple firewire lead ?, I don't reckon you can but it would be nice to know.

You could just slave the old computer over. Set the old HD as a slave in the new tower and copy things over. After you are done put the old HD back in the old system. Kinda involved if you are new to computers but, you dont need any cards or cables.

I do it all the time when I upgrade my HD.

I agree with Marco33. Absolutely the easiest and fastest way to transfer the files over, and should only take a few minutes once you get the HDD plugged in to the new PC. Just drag 'n drop them to the new HDD and you're done.
