  1. Whenever I got to write a dvd on my pioneer 106d it takes forever and a day to write. during the write the 'busy' light will not blink once for about 5 mins but given time it starts up again. A normal dvd could take up to about 45 mins to write at 4x!!!

writing normal cds is fine, its just when it comes to writing a dvd. ive tried writing at 2x but i still get the 'hanging' problems.

    can anyone help?

Sounds like a DMA issue. Make sure the IDE channel u have ur burner on is set for DMA and not PIO. Do a search on DMA and there are a lot of posts on how to check and setup it up.

If ur media is rated for 4x then it should take ~15min nornally

Just another check, do u have the burner set up as slave/cs by mistake instead of master. I see by ur comp specs that u only have the one Optical device. Just a check.

A freind had slow writes with his LG4040, sounded just like ur prob, we had to go to the BIOS to set the drive channel to DMA by not allowing the system to select the drive auto, we selected the drive manually to set DMA, even tho it was selected in Windows to use DMA but it was still PIO. Ur mobo manual will state exactly how this can be done for ur IDE channels. He has a ASUS P4PE mobo. Hope I am not stating the obvious here.

Also are the IDE cables good ones. Not all IDE Cables are created equal.

Just some trouble shooting advise to check out.

  8. had a look in my bios, cant find anything that allows me to force dma mode...it just lets me set the pio/dma modes.

I have noticed occasionally that my secondary IDE channel (device 0) sometimes changed from being set to Ultra DMA mode 2 to PIO mode. im guessing this is my dvd writer.

If it is using PIO mode sometimes, will this be the reason for my writer having periods during writing where it does nothing?

PIO will make the writing very slow. There's got to be a way in the bios to set DMA. We did it by not allowing the drive to be selected by the autonatic PnP and selected it manually, ie: assigning it to the device name as found by the bios. This was how the DMA was set on the P4PE mobo not sure about ur ASUS AMD mobo. Just check the manual about setting DMA for ur mobo.
