If DTS is a compression format, what do you need to ultilize it? I think u would need a dvd that can read it. Can a pc dvd-rom player use this? Could u install software to enable it? Would your sound card need to be compatable? Does a stereo need to be compatable. Mp3 is a type of compression format, but u dont need a special stereo to enable it?

Well dts is a different audio signal altogether you need a special decoder to hear true dts thats why most surround sound recievers have it built in,now its different from stereo and most dvd players have an optical digital or coaxial digital pass thru or a built in decoder as well . Now to hear the dts signal it needs to be decoded via a processor in a receiver or computer software. And finally to do a dts test first make sure the dvd has it as one of the audio signal options, any way put a dvd in your player select the dts track if your tv has no sound then its a dts signal which is 5.1 or 6.1 which is also called dtses like dolby digital but with more compression believe and it will only be heard thru a processor or decoder so remember dts is a completely different animal..

these first 2 posts hurt my head...
I just wanted to add you can put DTS on a regular cd as well. I have several commercial DTS CD's that I have purchased...

Yes, you can put DTS on a CD. In fact DTS has exclusive rights to the surround format on a CD. This is why you will never see Dolby Digital surround on a CD (legally anyway).
You will need the DTS encoder to do it. Have a look here - http://www.surcode.com/low/low_index.html
