  1. I would like to be able to backup a DVD9 to 2 - DVDR discs without any loss of video quality from compression or deletion. Any suggestions or experience?

i use smart ripper for all my ripping needs... i rip dvd9 movies (widescreen and fullscreen) and burn them to 2 seperate DVD+Rs without any noticeable quality loss.. when you watch them, they look identicle to the orginal DVD.

    Programs I use:
PowerDVD: run the DVD for a few before ripping it
    SmartRipper: ripping tool
    DVD2AVI: makes a .d2v file for tmpegenc
TMPGEnc: To encode to DVD mpeg-2
TMPEG DVD Author: to author it to DVD vob files
    Nero 6.3: to burn

picture comes our PERFECT! although it is a lot more steps then say DVD2ONE or so... but in my eyes its worth takint the extra time to make that much better quality videos.

have any questions? email me: virtual_worm@hotmail.com

  6. OK I used your advice to try and split Pirates of the Carribean into two discs one with menus and 1st part of movei on 1st dvd and 2nd part of movie and extras on 2nd dvd. The first DVD came out fine with Menus and first part of DVD... When I try to use DVD Shrink or Instant Copy to make an Image out of the 2nd disc folder I get this error message in Instant Copy " Corrupted DVD Source File" so I tried to open the file in DVD SHrink and I got this message "Invalid DVD Navigation Structure" Im wasting DVD-R's here can someone please give me a way to SPlit a DVD-9 into two DVD's b/c this way isnt working for me

I think a few users have had issues with POTC and DVDFab

it's to do with all the linked titles within the DVD structure as basically DVDFab workings cannot handle it

I wouldn't go as far as awesome as I know it can be so much better

if you do think it's awesome then what would you think about a program that rips/strips/crops/rebuilds direct from DVD? Dont' forget the menu modding features of course along with a few more extra features

I've known how to do it for months and there's a few guys out there capable of helping me make such a tool but none have stepped forward which is sad

    everyone's loss I guess

  13. I had this idea and hope I can get some feedback on what I have overlooked.

I thought since DVD9 burners/media are on the horizon, I should start doing uncompressed backups (2 discs). That way, should a method come along to merge the discs, I will be prepared.

Here's what I had in mind.

    1) After ripping to HD, use DVDShrink to reauthor main movie only with no compression, splitting at midway chapter point and author to HD (separate folders for each part).

    2) Copy all original disc files **except** main movie vobs from original rip to each reauthored folder.

    3) Burn each folder as DVD-video.

Since DVDShrink encodes so fast when no compression is involved, I gave it a try.

    Well, it worked...sorta.

The main issue I would have to work out is what to do about links to the parts of the movie that are on the other disc. Using the method to "add Insert disc 2" mpegs before reauthoring should solve the problem of empty menu links going back to main menu.

Also, since I am not sure whether DVDShrink still encodes even if there is not compression, I may give it a try with TMPGEnc DVD Author, since I know it does not reencode.

I did not play the reauthored movie to the end, so I do not know what happends when it finishes (whether it goes back to the main movie, locks up, whatever). Also, I only did the first disc, so I do not know if starting the movie in the middle (on the second disc) will have any effect.

I have the feeling some ifo manipulation will have to come in play, so I guess I will have to figure out what needs to be run through IFOEdit.

If my idea pans out, it should give two discs with full structure (including menus & extras) and half (or so) of the main movie and take less than 30 minutes to create (after ripping and before burning). And it only uses one or two free tools to boot.

Any thoughts, suggestions or recommendations I take my crackpot notions somewhere else would be greatly appreciated.

[Edited to add: Oops, I forgot. After reauthoring the main movie into two parts, move all bups & ifos from the reauthored VIDEO_TS folders to other folders (in the event of catastrophe).]

  14. While all these are great answers... I still havent solved my problem... I used DVDFab (which everyone seems to like) to split my movie into two discs....Now I just want a working menu extras and 1st part of movie on 1st dsic, and 2nd part of movie on 2nd disc.... After I get the folders "Disc 1" and "Disc 2" How do i burn it..

Everytime i go into that 2nd folder i get errors.... The 1st cd burns no problem... Here are the files that are in the folder "Disc 2"

    VIDEO_TS
    VIDEO_TS.BUP
    VTS_01_0
    VTS_01_0.BUP
    VTS_01_1.VOB
    VTS_01_2.VOB
    VTS_01_3.VOB
    VTS_01_4.VOB
    VTS_01_5.VOB
    VTS_01_6.VOB

Please tell me how to burn these files onto disc

  15. looks like you're missing an ifo file on the second disk. run the second disk through dvdfab and choose the option to "Create video manager".

  16. @Mackemx

that would be a nice program. I love the fact that dvdstripper can take anything out of the dvd you don't want yet still keep the menus intact. One of the reasons i like clonedvd is the fact that you can preserve the menu structure, and it allows you to take out whatever you want. The only drawback is that there's not much more functionality than that, and the quality isn't very good either (in my humble opinion).

I like to use dvdstripper because i can take whatever i want out of the dvd and then run the results through dvdshrink. I can then choose the compression rate, crop out credits, etc, etc.

@sk1pmcgee, do you want menu's on your 2nd disc?, as it looks like you are missing the VTS_01_0.VOB if you want the menu's. If not like dafreak mentioned just create some new IFO's

@dafreak, I just know DVDStripper could work so much better and maybe it could have evolved if those in the know decided to help

  18. Sure Menu's on the 2nd disc would be great...

I copied the VTS_01_0.VOB over form the 1st disc folder over to the 2nd disc folder... I try to open in DVD Shrink and still it gives me an error... Am i missing anymore files...

Also i do not care if i dont have any menus on the2nd disc... it would be nice but I would just care for the 2nd part of the movie..

Again 1st disc comes out fine, but still cannot burn the 2nd disc...

Should I try DVDStripper.. and is there a guide to use this

    Please let me know

just take the files from your 2nd folder and use nero dvd video function and put them in the video_ts folder and burn.
