  1. I have converted two Avi files to DVD fomat and am using DVD Lab to author. The problem is the total file size is just over 4.7GB and that's with editing. The audio files are 500MB and 400MB and the movie files are 2GB and 1.9GB. Is there a way to compress the audio with a minimum loss of quality while remaining DVD compliant?

    Sampling rate : 48000HZ
    Precision : 16 bit
    Channels : Stereo

  2. What format is the audio in ?. If its PCM WAV then no, but if its AC3 or MP2 then its poss to recompress it at a higher bitrate, prob not worth the effort and I bet you'd end up with sync probs. Best bet would be to run your finished 'DVD' through DVDshrink or DVD2one to compress it dopwn a lil bit to under 4.7gig

  3. Go back to your mpeg2 video files and run them through rejig at 95% (5% reduction).

  4. Benn_Black,

I may be wrong but it looks like ,going by the files sizes ,that your audio files are PCM and so can be compressed quite happily to AC3 or MP2. If you do this you won't have to change the bitrate on the video and therefore lose some (albeit possibly marginal) quality .

I would use BeSweet to create either an mp2 or Ac3 using a bitrate that gets you under your file size limit. Your choice

By the way, changing the bitrate should not affect audio sync at all.

Thanks for the advice. I found BeSweet really annoying so used Audio Converter 4.0 to convert WAV to MP2. Authored in DVD Lab and everything works a treat. My DVD (Toshiba) player picks up the audio as 'MPEG'. Is this audio format likely to cause compatibility issues on certain players?

Some few players may not support it and with some you must change some audio settings(usually mpeg->pcm) to be able hear anything. If you want best compatibility convert to ac3...but not with besweet/ffmpeg though.

I'll give it a try but from what I remember DVD Lab doesn't like ac3.

You could create the DVD, then use DVDShrink. That would compress the video, but it wouldn't have to compress it very much to get down to the right size.

I do not want to compress the video. I would rather compress the audio.

  10. Benn_Black,

Sorry I don't understand. If you say your DVD now plays ok in your standalone why do you want to convert the audio to Ac3? Or are you just thinking of the future?

For the future just in case MP2 causes problems on other players.
