  1. I'm interested in knowing what some of you are using and if your having trouble. I have tried 2 standalone recorders and have had some trouble when trying to reauthor on PC.

One problem is when ripping to hard drive, I would get errors and the files would not get copied. This was happening on about 3 out of 10 discs.
The other problem is when importing the files to a few authoring programs. The movie was not complete. Yes, I tried Vob's, Mpeg2 DVD and also demuxing. The same ratio 3 out of 10.

At this point i'm not looking for solutions to those 2 problems. I already know that it's the recorder. The 2 I have tried are the Sansui & Cyberhome. I am really interested in DVD+R/RW recording cause I have a lot of these discs to use up. However, I do welcome DVD-R/RW comments.

    Thanks

  2. dunno whats going wrong then, I simply copy the files I record with the dvd-recorder to my PC using windows explorer.
Are you sure it's not a media-problem? what brand discs are you using?

  4. I have the panny E30 brand/model (is -R and ram) so I dont know how much help I'll be, but I have had no problems taking a capture (using the ram format OR the dvdr format and putting it into TMPGENC DVD Author. What I do is (for the case of dvdr) is rip it to my computer using dvddecrypter and changing the setting to rip as one big file (instead of splitting the vob's)

Yes, I have made adjustments on DVDDerypter as well. I know it's the recorder. Maybe, I haven't given enough info as to why I think it's the recorder.

    1.Sansui and Cyberhome recorders.
2.The fact that 3 out of 10 discs
3.I've also had a few coasters
4.I only use top brands of DVD media that range from Ritek, Sony, Ricoh, TDK & Verbatim.

These DVD's still do play on all my DVD players and PC but have trouble with reauthoring.

  6. I would suggest that the problem is not the set top recorder but your pc dvd-rom/burner that you are using to read the discs. I have a CH-DVR1500 and can read the discs no problem with my Pioneer 105 PC burner but cannot read them at all with my PC DVD-ROM. I have successfully reauthored many discs orginally created on the CH-DVR1500.

Perhaps it would be worth your while updating the firmware of your PC drive to see if that help compatibility?

  7. I'm using a Panny e80 and going to my LG Electronics GSA4081B burner which recognizes and burns DVD+-R/RW/-RAM disks. You can get this drive for 128 shipped from accupc.com and that's the retail version. OEM is $10 cheaper.

I think the issue is with your burner as well rather than the recorder. My suggestion is to take a disk you created on your recorder to a friend that has a different model burner and see if it works on his. Is this an option?

    Hi,

I agree with mediaman2000. If the video plays fine. The media should be O.K. It happens to both Sansui (-R) and Cyberhome (+R). It is less likely to be the recorder.

I have a LiteOn 5001. I just copy the Video_TS to hard disk and reauthored with TPMG author. No problem at all. Some of my fellow LiteON users got the same problem and they all blame LiteON.

So? That doesn't mean they are going to be useful for your recorder. On left column of the page are topics on what media to use.

  10. Thanks again guys for responding. I didn't think I'd have to go that deep as to why I think it's the recorder. Other then the reasons I gave above,

1.I did try on other DVDROMS (I don't rip with a DVD Burner). I used the following - Lite-On, Memorex, Pioneer and Aopen. They all gave me the same results. I am up to date with all my firmware. They do play on the DVDroms.

2.I think the recorders are not consistent with their DVD Structure or just happens to be that I had 2 defective recorders. Like I said we are talking about Sansui and Cyberhome. I already brought back 1 Cyberhome cause it wouldn't recognize regular DVD's.

In response to handyguy, if these recorders don't like the media that i'm feeding it, then I don't want the recorders regardless of what it says on the side. The side is not always correct. I'm sure there many other recorders that would like them just fine.

I'm just asking for experiences with other standalone recorders and Re-authoring.

  11. I forgot one more important reason I think it's the recorder. I took the same content that I previously had trouble with and recorded it again on the same kind of media and this time the result was ok.

Mediaman2000, I do know where your coming from though. I had a similar problem reading regular DVD's on DVDroms a while back. The problem was the DVDrom. In this instance it isn't.

  12. I'm using the Pioneer 310-s an as far as media goes it has been TDK and Memorex DVD-RWs and Maxcell DVD-rs then ripped to my hard drive and burnt from there with no problems at all. I did record the Superbowl on the Memorex DVD-RWs and passed them out at work to about 6 people to try in their set tops and it worked in every one of them. Hope that helps you out.

  13. Ok, I just purchased the Philips dvdr75. My first recording yielded no problem with ripping and reauthoring. I'll keep recording and see. If it happens with this recorder, then I will have to re think everything.

  15. I have a e30, I just use panasonic dvdram disks, put them in my PC which has a panasonic lf d 521 writer & its easy. Guess what? I also have a panasonic dvd player too. I figured matching everything would be best.

  16. I have been using a Liteon 5001 (Gateway AR-230) for recording and have had some problems with copying them on a PC. My HP 300i DVD writer has much trouble reading DVD+R and DVD+RW disks made with the recorder. I have a Liteon DVD reader on another PC that has better luck reading the disks without errors, but even that doesn't work all the time. Generally, I can read DVD+RW disks more often and copy them to DVD+R. But I have yet to try re-copying the DVD+R disks - wouldn't surprise me if there are problems. I knew when I bought an early technology like the Liteone recorder there would be problems. But being able to re-copy disks is an important part of archiving. Right now it looks like commercial DVD's with copy protection can be copied easier than the dvd+R disks I make myself! Maybe there will be improvements in later firmware? I can hope at least,

  17. Ok, Here we are at the end of the weekend and if it wasn't for Valentine's Day I would have had a lot more done. I recorded 10 discs with the Philips DVDR75 and all 10 were perfect all around. This means Burning, Ripping and Reauthoring. When I say ripping I mean either ripping with DVDDecrypter or just copying to the hard drive. All files were accepted by Tmpgenc DVD Author, DVDLab & Womble Mpeg Video Wizard (mpeg editor).

In my previous posts I may not have been clear of what I was trying to say. The recorders I owned previous to the Philips were not consistent in all aspects that I just mentioned. Some would work some wouldn't.

It is sure nice to know that I can continue with my project and not have to worry anymore. I also recorded 1 dvd from component out of a DVD player to Component in to the recorder.

Sometimes going cheap will cost you in the long run.

  18. I finished a total of 20 disc and all are ok with my PC. I did come up with one problem and that was playback on another DVD player. I had recorded 1 disc in M1 (1 hour) mode and it was skipping around. It played ok in the Philips.

However, I've decided to take this player back due to not being to satisfied with the picture quality. It wasn't bad, I just think I can do better.
I'm gonna hold off for now because i'm in the process of moving and later get back into this stand alone DVD recording.
