I noticed my DVD writer's read speed has gone down from past 4x to 0.8x last nite.
I was using Decrypter to back-up a dvd to my hard drive. Thats when I noticed it was reading it at 0.8x. I tried a different dvd and it was still 0.8x. I remember when I flashed it the first I noticed a jump in increase in read speed. So I flashed it again, but still reads at 0.8x
Does the writer's read speed eventually go down over time?
Or is it something I can fix? Or does it depend on what dvd it is trying to read?

XP has a bad habit of ocassionaly changing DMA settings on it's own. Ripping speed is somewhat dependent on the DVD you are reading, but not by that much.
-
I just checked and the transfer mode is set to "DMA if available". It also says 'current transfer mode' is "PIO".
Now what? -
Yes. I mean it was already set that way. I double checked the settings also in the Bios/Cmos area.
I wanted to add that my dvd-drive is set as the secondary master too. My ide cable wouldn't fit as a primary slave.
But if I had no problems before, why do I now?
This thing is too weird. -
copy and pasted from the rip speed tip sticky
Tip #3: Re-install IDE Controller
Some people on this forum have reported that re-installing their primary IDE controller gave them a boost in ripping speed. I haven't tested this method, so I cannot provide you with many details.
Steps to re-install Primary IDE Controller (Windows XP)
Right click on 'My Computer' on your desktop and select Properties. Click the Hardware tab and launch the Device Manager. Press the + sign to expand the tree of 'IDE Controllers'. Right click your Primary IDE Controller and select Uninstall. Now re-boot your computer, and Windows should automatically re-install your IDE Controller. -
I guess I technically did that too.
I finally got over my lazyness to buy a longer IDE cable and make my dvd drive on the primary instead of secondary.
I made it the primary slave, and when I booted up, it found a new dvd drive reinstalled it, and am now reading up to 4x again. Don't know why it stopped reading that fast in the first place.
Since I didnt know what the PIO mode was, which was set on the secondary ide, even though it said "DMA if available", I realized the primary ide said DMA mode so I just moved the dvd drive there.
Either that or just the simple re-install of the drive did it. I dont know, but I'm a happy camper again.
I hope people learned a new lesson here.
Thanks for all the suggestions given. -
I was having the SAME problem, but now, after un-installing and then letting Windows XP RE-install both of my IDE channels (drivers) automatically after rebooting (two times actually). I was running at around 1200 KB/s since I got my DVD-burner last night. I was using DVD Shrink and it was taking over 1 hour and 30 mins. Then I did the above and it started at 3500, and averaged around 3300, which took around 40 mins, instead of the projected 2 hours that it was showing me when I tried doing the same DVD earlier (never let it finish though because it was going to take so long). So, I finally got my original copy of Lock, Stock & 2 Smoking Barrels backed-up
Then I backed-up my original In The Bedroom. At first I had a problem encoding it because it said that the sectors were encryptedbut after trying it again, it went through, with no problems. I had less of a compression % on this DVD then my Lock Stock DVD (Lock = 52%, Bedroom = 62%). This one took me even LESS TIME (around 25 mins) and it was rolling at a READ SPEED when encoding at close to 6000 KB/s.
I was wondering why the increase in READ SPEED? Was it mainly due to the compression rate - the fact that it was less compressed? The more you compress a DVD, the longer it will take to copy??? I don't know, just askingThanks
