i can recommend NEC AD-7170S its a 18x DVD+-RW, 12x DVD-RAM etc with 16x DVD-ROM, and best of all it has SATA interface and is cheapo around 273nok (47usd) in norway, its one of the cheapest here

10.6x speed using a 4kus DVD-16X6S drive. It's more than fast enough for me. Not looking to go any faster.

its good to see that 16x isnt a marketing gimic anymore, some years ago it was that hardly any 16x can go over 8x ^^ on any media

I get the distinct impression that the drive is not stressing out or trying hard at all to get that speed out of it. I feel the limiting factor is HDD writing speed and not the DVD reading speed.

In the 10x-15x range. Only works on a fast 7200 rpm hard drive or better, optical on IDE opposite of hard drive. Never had a problem with this, not now, not 6 years ago.

    Don't confuse reading with ripping.

And different discs will read different speeds. A DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, and DVD-RW will all act different.

Not sure what you're saying there. Maybe English is not your first language or (more likely) I'm just a bit thick, but to be clear, the numbers I quoted were for ripping a CSS encoded retail pressed DVD-Video disc (single layer) to 7200rpm HDD on IDE1.
