  1. I live in Seattle and have a version The Goonies that is PAL. I have a DVD player that says it does PAL/NTSC conversion (as per the player section at this web site). The goonies DVD does not play...actually plays, but has lins going through the screen making it un wathcable. I have the player, a panasonic s25, set to :"progressive scan" nad not "interlaced". would that be the problem? Could it be the DVD player just is not that great? Any ideas? I have a $2500 Mitsubishi 55" big screen and the guy who sold it to me told me that the PAL disk will not play because the TV is NTSC and not PAL, but that sounds like BS.

Do others here (Americans) have problems playing PAL DVD's? The guy where i bought my TV made it sound like I was out of my mind to think that PAL DVD would play here in the states.

    Any advice is appreciated

The Panasonic S25 cannot do PAL to NTSC conversions. It can be modifed to be region free and also play PAL DVD discs but even then it will output what you put in it. Play back a PAL DVD and you get a PAL output. Playback a NTSC DVD and you get a NTSC output.

To the best of my knowledge the only way to make the Panasonic S25 region free and PAL capable (but again no PAL <--> NTSC conversion) is to have it modified with special hardware. This is not so easy a thing and you are better off buying a "new" already modified one than try and do it yourself.

But even then it is not the best choice if your TV display ONLY does NTSC since the S25 ... even when modified ... cannot do conversions.

There are a few other DVD players you should look at if you want PAL to NTSC conversion and region free. One of the best and not that expensive is the Cyberhome CH-DVD 500 which can be ordered direct from the CYBERHOME website for around $79.95

The NERD-OUT website has a forum dedicated to Cyberhome and has all the EASY-TO-DO tricks you need to make the Cyberhome CH-DVD 500 region free including PAL to NTSC conversion (which is actually built-in and requires no trick).

  3. As I understand from forums'info at afterdawn.com: In UK and Germany their TVs /DVD players can display NTSC signal without any problem. In North America most TVs can only display NTSC signal (hopefully the new HDTV can display both). I would recommend DVD players made in China, Korea... such as Daytek P871 (CAN $59.00 at Future shop) , Sungale DVD-8208 ($US 80.00 on Ebay)., some APEX DVD players can also play both . The best part is these models are CHEAP, play both NTSC and PAL signal, Region free . You just feed their outpput (Composite/S video or Components) directly to your regular TVs or Projectors. Another bonus I found is they can also play PAL DVDs made in SouthEast Asia which may be produced under a different O.S than Windows. These DVDs canNOT be read (regconized ) by Windows which inturn cannot be play on a computer using Windows based softwares such as WinDVD .

    Cheers,
