PAL to NTSC DVD Conversion Problem

In the past, I've converted numerous DVDs from PAL to NTSC using VobBlanker and IfoEdit. However, today I ran into a problem trying to convert the Star Wars Trilogy. The original PAL version plays fine on my computer when I try to open the first VIDEO_TS.VOB with WMP11, but the converted NTSC file does not play and simply shows a black screen. The same problem occurs when I try to use my NTSC DVD player.

My knowledge of VobBlanker/IfoEdit and DVD converting is fairly limited but I'm guessing that the answer to my problem lies in the warnings that VobBlanker has given me in the log. Any ideas how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

In the past, I've converted numerous DVDs from PAL to NTSC using VobBlanker and IfoEdit.

That's not a PAL2NTSC conversion. If what you do ever "works", then you've been lucky so far. To do a real conversion, you have to reencode.

Well after reading your reply, I searched the forums and realized that the method I was using was not a true PAL to NTSC conversion but rather a patch that happened to work with my DVD player.

I would still be interested to know as to why this specific patched DVD does not play properly, where as all the other ones I've made do.

Because the patch method is, at best, hit and miss. As Manono suggested, that it has worked for you this far is more by luck than anything else. The problem could lie in the structure of the discs, or the way they were ripped. The Star Wars films have fairly complex discs, with multiple branches for different language text crawls, randomly chosen motion menu backgrounds and other trickery. If ever a disc was going to trip up the furphy that is the patch method, it would be one of these.

I guess my question would by why ? If you have an NTSC player, why buy PAL versions of discs easily available in the NTSC format. It is far easier, and a lot more reliable, to just buy a multi-format player.

My question is why is someone in Sweden converting PAL to NTSC in the first place? Unless the original poster lives in the USA and wants to hide this fact, I don't think the whole idea of converting PAL to NTSC in Sweden makes any sense.

Anyway, regardless of where the original poster really lives, if you have to convert formats more than two times, it's time to buy a multi-format player. Of course there are always people who place no value at all on their spare time and if you are one of these people, then you will ignore my advice. Philips makes a variety of DVD players that can convert between PAL and NTSC and they start at about $50-60 US and I would think that it would just make more sense to buy a cheap converting DVD player than to continually do this patch method. If you decide to buy a converting DVD player, find a model you like and research it on the internet to be sure it can convert between PAL and NTSC before you buy it. If you find a model that has a "hack" (a remote control number sequence) to put it in multi-region mode, that would be very useful to you too.
