  1. I have a Leadtek Win2000XP Deluxe capture card hooked up to my VHS for the purpose of converting old tapes to DVD. With the new version of Winfast PVR from Leadtek there was a burn to DVD on the fly option I had never seen before.

When I tried it, the whole computer started to grind to a halt, video on screen was choppy, everything was straining. I have an AMD 1600XP
and 512mb of PC3200 memory on an ASUS board (win XP)

I know it is not up to the task because the DVD wouldn't even play in my player. My question is.....with a more powerful system, is direct capture and burn possible with any quality or is it just a pipedream ? I want
to convert my VHS as easily as possible, this seemed like a great idea,
just like the set-top converters you see out there now.

I am trying to find a one stop user friendly solution for relatives who are not as computer savvy. Any ideas or tips ?

With a fast computer, good video capture card, fast harddrive, yes. Much easier with something like a ADVC-100 and on the fly encoding with MainConcept encoder. Almost plug and play and a very fast computer isn't needed. The ADVC can also be loaned around to different computers as long as they have a Firewire card.

Ulead Movie Factory 2 can do this and with very reasonable quality at the higher bitrate settings.
I was using this with an Athlon 2000 XP+ although I now have a set-top recorder which is much less hassle and better quality.
The problem with these programs is they use the VR format which is not so compatible with DVD players.
My logix plays these disks but won't fast forward/rewind more than 2x and won't do time search.
