  1. I've been reading a lot on the forum about not using TMPGenc to compress audio and have read a few posts that suggest to use VirtualDub to separate the audio before encoding video only in TMPGenc. I am a bit confused and was hoping someone could straighten me out.

My plan was to read a captured AVI with LPCM audio into TMPGenc. I was thinking that if I encode this with the audio setting specified as LPCM (matching the source), that I would end up with two elementary streams as output with no modifications to the audio by TMPGenc. My next step would be to input these two elementary streams into TMPGenc Author where I would use the AC-3 plug-in to encode the audio.

In this scenario, I don't understand why I would need to separate the audio stream with VirtualDub before using TMPGenc (as others have suggested).

Would someone help me out on this?

    Thanks!

  2. Frankly, your plan sounds fine. I don't understand why TMPGEnc gets such a bad rap for audio encoding. My encodes sound fine to me. If there is an audible difference, I surely wouldn't mind someone pointing it out?

Use the method that works the best for you is what I recommend. Also, make sure your audio setting in TMPGEnc is set to "high quality."

I have never heard any audible glitches using TMPGEnc to encode (compress) audio. I'd imagine the glitches come directly from the source.

Try and encode a video source with the sound not quite up to par then hear it after a tmpgenc encode and you`ll hear the difference.Worse.I convert my sound directly thru ffmpeg to ac3.

  4. If my source AVI has LPCM audio, and I specify LPCM audio settings in TMPGenc, will TMPGenc re-encode the audio or just demux it?
