  1. i am running TMPGEnc 2.0 what are the optimal settings to get rid of block noise while encoding??? please list each and every single one!! thanks./

    From a high quality source, bitrate, bitrate, and bitrate are all you need to know ... if your source isnt of the best quality, there isnt much you can do to improve it.

    For cartoons such as Simpsons and Family Guy that I captured, I use Noise Reduction Filter usually @ 100/2/100. Yes it's ALOT, but when it comes to simple cartoons as those, it turns out fantastic. But for other shows, non-cartoon, I use 20/1/25.

  5. i do all my cleaning up in VDub:

    capture at 720 x 480 (uncompressed)
    filters: (uncompressed output)
    - deinterlace (blend)
    - resize 352 x 240 (cropping)
    - dynamic noise reduction (12)
    - smartsmoother (5/50)
    - unsharp mask (12)
    encode with panasonic, both filters at "weak".

    hope this helps everyone improve. id like some feedback tho. EMAIL ME your thoughts, its on the left <---.

    I am really interesting in using the VirtualDub filters instead of TMPGEnc's filters. Unfotunately, I'm not familar with VirtualDub's filters and what they can do. I wanted to know what filters and settings I should use in order to acheive an equilvant output of what it would be under TMPGEnc's Noise Reduction Filter @ 100/2/100. Please do try to respond.     Use Panasonic encoder if you want less block noise.

  8. Much depends on the source you are working with and the ultimate format you are going to encode to and also how the video will be viewed. Asking how to reduce block noise is itself too broad a question likely to result in too broad an answer.

    What severity of block noise? Is it present in the source file or are you introducing it during the encoding process? Does it show up when the video is played on your PC, just your DVD setup or both? If just on a PC is there block noise when viewed at the rendered resolution or only when you attempt to view at double size or full screen?

    The more thought out your questions the more useful the answers will be.

    Unsharpen won't help with block noise. It does the reverse of what the name suggests...sharpening images like in Photoshop. Using it if you have blocks, will only make them stand out more. Instead try one of the blur filters.

  11. You still haven't told us your bitrate and res of your source file. I think vdub can tell you (File >> properties).

    If you play the source file on winplayer and it's blocky, your into alot of hours of fun.

  12. IT ALL DEPENDS...

    there are so many aspects that go into producing a high quality video. everyone has there way. there is no ONE way to achieving A-best. it all depends on your own eyes and preferences.

    i threw mine out there in example, a starting point. my procedure will be different than most people and our steps we use to produce something will only compliment our preferences.

    based on my experiences, trial and error, i found this to be the most productive method for ME. just stick by the rules:

    "garbage in, garbage out; you cant better your source file; understand the tools youre using; put in all the time and effort; and its only good enough for you until you accept that fact"

    GOOD LUCK EVERYONE. there is no easy way...

  14. no no. im converting a 720x352 divX into a 480x480 SVCD. does some noise occur because the vertical resolution is being stretched from 352 to 480? the source divX is not blocky, but when converted to super video cd it looks like lego in motion scenes.

  15. i would imagine that the divX bitrate is in the 900's. it doesnt say in vdub. the only things shown in file >> properties are:

    Frame size, fps
    # of frames
    Decompressor
    # of key frames
    Min/Avg/Max Key frame size
    Min/Avg/Max Delta frame size

    anyway the bitrate shouldnt be of that much importance in the divX file should it? because the blockiness occures when i convert it to SVCD. im using MVBR 2500kbs.

  16. Yeshi, the bitrate of the DivX does matter the most, since if the bitrate there is low, your SVCD won't be good no matter what you do.

  17. of course it matters but the point here is that there isnt any block noise in the divX file so obviously the bitrate is sufficient. Blocknoise occurs during coversion, thats my whole point

    xaanin is right. DivX isn't a good source for SVCD creation at all. And a divx bitrate ~900 is quite low.
    Use all HQ settings like Motion search precision: highest quality, CBR 2500 or higher. Enable Soften Block Noise at the quantize matrix tab. You will see, you still wont get the perfect quality.

    Anyone know anything about CCE's Anti Noise Filter. It seems to not work that effectively. I tried using it on a Simpsons EP with the highest possible level of setting. The results came out really minimal...

    CCE's noise reduction filter is quite poor. Better you use the TMPG noise reduction filter or maybe there is also one for VirtualDub. But a noise reduction filter doesn't solve Yeshi's problem.

  21. damn that sux. then why are DVD rips so widely circulated as divX avi files. AVI files just suck in general. there has never been a half decent bloody avi codec, and then some nut comes out and invents one that uses stinking low bitrates. Heres how it is for me. there are two types of AVI DivX DVD Rip files that i have
    1) ones with blockiness already
    2) ones with no blockiness

    The ones with blockiness, when encoded to SVCD turn out much worse than what they started. The ones with no blockiness turn out like lego when you SVCD them. its a real pain.

    Could be because of the codec used to create these non-standard divX files!
    First understand, that divX is a hacked (stolen/copied) version of an MPEG4??
    I forget, so please don't yell at me. Anyway, so don't blame these decent
    encoders like cce (I don't use) and TMPGEnc (I do use) for causing your
    blocks! These encoders simply don't go where divX codecs went to get you
    the quality you stated! And so, you'll continue to get blocks using these
    two good encoders. They just wont go the same route that divX codecs goes
    to under those blocks! At least, this is how I see it, as far as why you
    get those blocks. And, besides, aren't those divX movies that R created
    with those non-standard resolutions, i.e., your 720x352 (I've seen 600x232
    and more) ment to be viewed in the RESOLUTION they are encoded for anyways?
    I have a friend at work and he watches these divX modies in strange windows
    and when I asked him, "why not view in full screen!", he said, "that
    these are divX movies...", "you just don't go messing with the resolution!",
    "...play it as it is, and quality is greate!". Of course, when I saw what
    he was looking at, I noticed right away that the quality really sucked
    big time!! But, some people just don't know!! They don't know what's
    GOOD quality, and what's BAD quality. They are in it for the movie!

    Again, if your divX movie was bitrated at say 1800, bumping up the bitrate
    is NOT gonna get you any enhanced quality. You're kidding yourself if you
    try this... probably already have. But, anyway, increasing the bitrate
    from 1800 to 2500 is (IMO) only gonna imphasize the blocks, and/or/new any
    artifacts in your encodes. Sorry. It's like stretching 352x240 to fit
    on your 1024x768 monitor - it's gonna look like crap - blocks, blurry and
    blochy looking. Especially if the res. is a strange on, like 720x352.
    Now, you can take a 720x480 and go 480x480 or 352x480 or 352x240 and get
    pretty good quality in all these res. but you CAN NOT take a 352x240 go
    up with it and think you're gonna get excellent quality - you're only
    kidding yourself on this. I know, because for a while, I did!!
    I may get some arguments on this (and prob. deserves it's own posting),
    it's the TRUE!!!!!!!!! Wake up and SMELL the COFFEE!!!
    Otherwise, post a sample clip somewhere for us to see.

    Again, its the divX codec (or do I have it wrong, encoder). Anyways,
    again, cce and tmpg have there own codecs and see's thing much differently,
    or is uncovering divX's dirt!
    AVI's aren't so bad. And, if I'm correct, those dvd's (or VOBs) are really
    high bitrate mpegs files. I think as high as 9000. So, when we encode
    to SVCD @ 2500 bitrate, quality is still good, cause these dvd's have no
    blocks in them to begin with (I think).

    can you please read all my posts before you post such things assuming i dont know shit. i already listed it was a 720x352 divX not 352x240.

  27. Well i did some research on this myself, and found some very good results that helped me heaps. without use of filters either. For all interested, the following TMPGEnc settings are optimal for divX -> SVCD.
    --------------------------------------------------------------

    VIDEO TAB
    - 480x480 NTSC or 480x576 for PAL
    - 4:3 Aspect
    - 2pass Variable Bitrate (Avg. 1900, Max. 2600, Min. 600)
    - MP@ML
    - 4:2:0 ( i dont think standalone's play 4:2:2)
    - 10 bits DC Coefficient
    - High quality motion search

    GOP STRUCTURE TAB
    Number of I Picture - 1
    Number of B picture - 1
    Number of P Picture - 1

    This will give you the sequence IBPB - This has been documented on some websites to help improve blockiness and overall quality.

    Quantize Matrix Tab

    - On the dropdown bar, change from default to MPEG Standard
    - Use Soften Block Noise (Intra = 45, NON Intra = 30)

    System Tab

    - Make sure your steam type is MPEG2 SVCD

    --------------------------------------------------------------

    I found these settings gave me very good results when encoding divX 720x352 to SVCD 480x480. There was virtually no block noise at all.
