Try highest quality motion search in TMPGENC.

Yep. that works quite well infact. Highest quality is rather a waste of time though. Results on the HIGH QUALITY setting are identical and about %10 faster

Yeshi, after all are you satisfied with the SVCD quality?
Is it close to the DivX quality or only acceptable?

  3. After alot of experimentation and looking into it, im satisfied now. I can really compare the quality. Like when i watch both the divX and SVCD on my computer they both look quite nice, and basically the same. when i watch the SVCD on my TV it looks way better than the divX, because the TV display is 100x better than my monitor display, and as a result the picture is much sharper, and crisp on my TV, yet there is basically no block noise showing. to everybody out there, dont listen when people tell you DivX is a bad source for SVCD, it isnt. its very good if you do everything correctly.

You did it. Good job. This is very interesting.
What do you think is the main reason, the use of soften block noise or the higher number of I-frames?
Maybe you figured this out. Otherwise I will try it myself.
I ask this, because the compression effeciency of a movie with a IBPB GOP structure is not as good as with a IBBPBBPBBPBBPBB structure.
    Thanks again.

  5. you are correct the compression efficieny is not as good, but the results are quite good. the I frame every 4 frames helped nicely. The soften block noise helped a bit. all these things helping abit added up, and ended up making a huge difference.

    - unsharp mask (12)
    </BLOCKQUOTE></FONT></TD></TR><TR><TD><HR size=1 color=black></TD></TR></TABLE>

Is that "12" for diameter, strength, or threshold?
I'm using Unsharp Mask Filter v1.3.

  9. Unsharp mask sux altogether. It makes the block noise more apparent by increasing the contrast of the edges.

  10. yeshi, can i use those tmpg settings you listed for the same divx files to xvcd instead and lowering the resolution to 352x240? will it help get rid of some of the block noise? if not, give me your two cents on what i should do to eliminate some blocks. the divx is in real high quality.

  11. hmm if you are doing a divX --> 352x240 XVCD conversion you wont have much block noise. anywayz. as for bitrate rate mode.

If you dont care about the output filesize use CQ Quality 100 max. bitrate 2520 (this will give you the bes quality)

If you want to fit your movie on 1 CDR use 2pass VBR with average bitrate of 900 (this will give you a rather blocky movie)

If you want to fit the movie on 2 CDr's use 2pass VBR with an average bitrate of around 1600-1700 (this will take longest, but will give you the best quality to size ratio)

Use HIGH QUALITY motion search precision
    Use 10bit DC co-efficient
Use GOP Structure 1,11,1 (NOT 1,1,1). 1,1,1 gives you a larger file size.
Make sure DETECT SCENE CHANGE is checked
Use a quantize matrix setting of MPEG STANDARD
make sure USE FLOATING POINT DC is checked

DONT USE THE SOFTEN BLOCK NOISE SETTING! its hopeless. at low values it has no effect, and at high values it increases block noise

Using CQ will give you the outright best looking movie
Using 2pass VBR with very low bitrate will give you a small movie that looks ugly
Using 2pass VBR with normal average bitrate will gie you a pretty good looking movie without many blocks in motion scenes
