  1. Hi,

I have a mpg file which is only 3mb over 700mb and my burner cannot overburn, how can i reduce the file size? Or can i?

    Thanks!

if you burn it as your are supposed to -- you can burn ~800meg on your 700meg cd ..

you will need to burn in Mode 2, Form 2 MPEG sectors ( 2,324 bytes ). instead of mode 1 (or Mode 2, Form 1 data sectors ( 2,048 bytes ) (DATA)) ...

this is how svcd and vcd are burned ....

SVCD is an official standard now BTW ... "IEC 62107 standard"

    Features Super Video CD 1.0
    Video
    bit rate
    resolution NTSC
    resolution PAL MPEG-2
    variable up to 2.6 Mbps
    480x480 interlaced, 29.97Hz
    480x576 interlaced, 25Hz
    Still picture (photo)
    resolution NTSC
    resolution PAL MPEG-2 ( I Frame )
    480x480, 704x480
    480x576, 704x576
    Audio
    sampling
    bit rate
    audio channels
    surround sound MPEG-1 layer II
    44.1 KHz
    from 32 to 384 Kbps
up to 2 stereo or 4 mono
    MPEG-2 ( 5+1 ) extension
    Overlay graphics and text
    sub-channels
    coding overlay video plane
    <=4
    4 color CLUT ( 2bits/pixel )

The Program Stream contains two audio streams, usually for two separate languages. Audio streams are MPEG-1 audio formats, given in the table below:
    MPEG-1 (ISO 11172-3) audio formats
    Layer layer II only
Bit Rate may vary from frame to frame
    single channel mode
    dual channel mode
stereo mode 32 to 192 Kbps
    64 to 384 Kbps
    64 to 384 Kbps
    Sampling frequency 44.1 KHz

The video MPEG-2 streams are defined by the constraints of Main Profile at Mail Level ( MP@ML ):
    MPEG-2 video MP@ML profile
    B-frames YES
    Chroma format 4:2:0
    Scalabilty NONE
    Intra DC precision 8, 9, 10 bits
    Buffer size 1,835,008 bits
    Luminance sample rate 10,368,000
    Horizontal vector range -512..+511.5
Vertical vector range (frame pictures) 128..+127.5

The interlaced nature of the video signal is preserved. This results in smoother-looking motion for video footage that was originally shot with a field-based video camera.

The typical running time of an SVCD disc (with full resolution and quality) is about 35-45 minutes, although it can be extended to over 70 minutes by compromising image and sound quality.

For PC playback, the format allows storing applications or setup files in the EXT directory. The main root can even contain autorun enabling files.

An SVCD detailed technical explanation is available from Philips licensing page http://www.licensing.philips.com/cdsystems/cdsupervcd.html

  3. Sorry, but the file is over 800mb, but in Nero it shows that the total capicity on disc is 703MB but total capicty for burning it is 705MB, therefore, i need 2mb more on the disc! I am using the right mode in Nero as it burns VCD's. I just want to know how i can cut it or somehow reduce the file size by 2mb

    Thanks

that makes no sense what you just said --

    is the file 800meg ?

is it is a bin image (which will be over 800meg but burn as ~800)

is there credits on the end ? if so -- cut them off a little ..

what format is your source file you are using? in mpeg1 ? or something else?

  6. You can also do this without losing any video
    1) use TMPGenc to demux the MPEG file to M1V file (video only)
    2) use TMPGenc to re-encode the MPEG file (audio only), make sure you select a lower bit rate for audio. This should go pretty quick and you will get a .MPA file
    3) use TMPGEnc to mux the the M1V and .MPA file back to MPEG. If you lower the audio bit rate enough, the MPEG file will be smaller and ... you can continue to burn again.

  7. I'm sorry for not being clear, but the initial file size is 796MB as indicated on the HD. I know once you begin to compile a VCD to burn, a file around 800MB should fit on a 700MB CDR. The problem is, when I add the MPG to burn in NERO using VCD mode, Nero pops up and lets me know that the movie is 2MB over the limit of my CDR. In the bottom of Nero, where it indicates the size of the compilation, it over the limit and shows a red line, just slightly over the limit. I have burned hundreds of VCDs, but I just do not know how to edit them. Is there a program that I can download and cut a couple of frames from the movie file?

    Thanks

  9. Why not use a mpg cutter to trim the bullshit off the end - the end titles and 'key grip' 'best boy' junk - on some movies that'll be 5 mins or so. That'll kill 5 - 10 megs...

<edit> oops, sorry - he did ask about trimming.. Just search here for "mpg cutter" or "mpg trimmer"

From my experience Ktnwin has the best solution.
    Lower the audio bitrate(perhaps 128k)
This approach will retain your audio/video sync and save you
    some megs.

A cutter may work, if you don't care about aud/vid sync.

The bitrate for the audio is already 128k, i think i I will just have to cut out some frames.

  15. some standalones don't like non-standard audio bitrates. YMMV
