  1. Hey all,

I just bought a new capture device that will encode the MPEG2 Audio stream as PCM or MPEG1L2.

Now this device is going thru a 1.1 USB port so my desire is to encode it at the MPEG1L2 setting to allow me to increase the size of my video stream. (currently 3Megs/second)

+ First question: How compatible is the MPEG1L2 audio streams with the various DVD decks out there? (my TV DVD will play VCD's so I'm not worried there... however my Honday DVD I'm not sure of)

+ Second question: Regarding a 3 Meg Video Stream ... will that be 'clean' enough for DVD playback?

All region 2 DVD standalone players, have mp2 audio on their specifics. It is an official alternative to dolby digital, much more official than the DTS support...
It is also compatible with many R1 and R4 standalones from what I know.

  3. SatStorm,

Thanks... When you encode your MPEG's what is your audio flavor?

    AC3, MPL2, PCM?

    Hi tjborwn101,

I convert extracted WAV (PCM @ 1,536kbps) to AC3 using ffmpeggui (@ 192 - 256kbps). I'm in PAL land so could use MP2 too (as SatStorm mentions).

They are both compressed and both neglible quality loss - meaning that the audio is damn near as good as the original (I extract audio from DV AVI), but taking up a lot less space leaving more for the video.

The reason for my preference for AC3 is that it's supposed to be that little bit better quality over MP2 at the same bitrates, and slightly smaller file size.

Usefully, ffmpeggui does WAV to MP2 aswell.

Second question: Regarding a 3 Meg Video Stream ... will that be 'clean' enough for DVD playback?
If you're capturing full DV (720 x 576 PAL, 720 x 480 NTSC) via the original USB standard (as opposed to the latest version 2), I believe that you're highly likely to encounter problems with the quality of the captured footage and hence the finished DVD.

That said, I've read of people having problems with USB2 (don't know why, coz it's much faster).

I use firewire (also known as 1394 or iLink) and have found it to be very reliable. You can pick up firewire cards very cheaply and don't have to buy special brand names.

    Hope that helps.

  5. Thanks... I'll let you know on the quality of the 3 Meg encoded DVD file with MPeg1L2 Audio.

Since I only have 1.1 USB I have about 6 Meg max xfer rate... I tried 3 Meg vid with PCM and it was clipping out on me. So I have to live with 3-4 Meg vid and ML2 Audio.

I mostly use mp2 audio, since "musicam" is my DVB source (mp2/mpa/musicam, all are about the same thing). Also mp2 with a bitrate about 192kb/s is just OK for analogue captures.
Just to mention, the 90% of the european DVB channels, are using 192kb/s - 48000khz - Stereo. When I re-encode dvb transmissions to valid DVD framesizes, only rarelly I have to encode the audio. I leave it as is, untouched!
