  1. Hello,

    I'm hoping someone can help me out. I have searched this site and the web and found some info but I'm new at this and getting confused on what I should and how i should do this. I'm hoping someone can explain it in easier terms.

    I have an avi that is 574x244 23.9 which has an aspect ratio of 2.35. I use TEMPEGenc to make and svcd using the wizard and picking NTSC Film with most of the defaults except for full screen keep aspect ratio and high quality. When I watch it on the tv it looks great except it is so small. I know that cause it has an 2.35 aspect ratio. I tried changing the settings on my tv to 16.9 from 4.3 and it makes it even small. Is there a way I can change it have an aspect ratio of 16.9 so that it is a little bigger on my tv? I want to make the black bars across the top and bottom a little smaller and still keep the right aspect ratio. I don't want to use the no boarders/margins setting cause you lose to much off the sides. I hope I explained what I'm looking to do.

    Thanks for any help.

    No, you can NOT keep the aspect ratio and remove the black borders. You can make it 16:9 but you must cut it then:

    Under Settings->Advanced in TMPGEnc select
    1:1
    full screen(keep aspect ratio)

    click Clip frame and cut the left and right so you get it to 16:9(1.7777)
    574x244 would be 433x244(size after clipping) = cut 70 pixels left and right.

  4. Thank you very much for your help. I will try that. Since aspect ratios still confuse me a bit. Could you tell me how you got the numbers 433x244.

    Thanks

  5. Hello,

    Just checking to see if I'm doing it right. From what Baldrick wrote and lots of time on the calculator and re-reading all the great info available, I think I have finally figured out how it all works.

    To get the new aspect ratio on an avi. The avi file I have is 576x240 unlike what I said in my original post 574x244 was incorrect, sorry. Here is what I did.

    240x1.77=424.8 round to 426
    426/240=1.775 aspect ratio (what I want)
    576-426=150/2=75 round to 76.

    clipping 76 pixels from right and left. so the new 426x240=1.77 (16:9)

    I think this is right but not sure??? Still learning!!!!

    Thanks for readin my post and helping me.

    SVCD only supports 4:3 DAR (Display Aspect Ratio). What you are shooting for is a 16:9 (after clipping) video with black borders to make it 4:3.

    You math is correct. Now encode it to add borders as 4:3 and your done!
