  1. Well I am going to purchase an NEC 2500A burner and everywhere I want to purchase says its OEM. One of my questions is am I going to need to purchase screws, an audio cable, a data cable or anything like that? I already have a DVD player and a CD burner installed. Which one should I take out to install the DVD burner? Thanks!

  2. You should not have to purchase anything else to install.

Keep the DVD player, That way you have a player to rip from and one to burn to. DVDshrink allows you to rip/encode from one and burn with nero to the other. Pretty much. almost one button burning.

Use the screws from the CD burner, and plug the DVD burner into the spot where the CD burner was located.

Software... DVD Decrypter for burning image files! Can't beat it for the price...FREE!
Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?

What to get along with DVD burner???
Well, if the sales person is a sexy girl, then Id get a .........

Actually, if you dont rip dvd's that often, but you still burn cd's or cdrw discs then u may want to keep the cd burner as it will burn a CD much much faster than ur dvd writer will. Something to keep in mind.

Nope, you dont need any of those. Just take out either the cd or dvd unit and pklug in the new dvd writer. Examine them closely as u dont wanna fudge things up. The plugs go in only ONE way, so dont force them if u feel much resistance, stop, smoke a cig, cyber with some fat girl, drink a soda and then look at the plugs on the unit that is currently connected and u will see that the power plug goes in only one way and the ata cable also, look for the red line on it and plug it in the same way as ur unit that is still in there. If u google this u can find some nice pics to help u along, but its really a piece of cake.

Oh yea, if u replace ur mother board, dont forget to put in the STAND OFFS or u will fry ur board like I did 4 years ago. great learning experience

If you're still confused. OEM can mean several things. Worst case, just the bare drive, no screws, cables or anything. Most of the time it just means no software and possibly no instructions. Even if you have nothing except the drive, you only need screws, a drive cable and an audio cable. These are are readily available. Instructions are easy to find on most burner websites.

My Optorite DD0401 generic will burn CD's at 40x, my Samsung CDR will burn at 48x, not much difference there. It also rips DVD's at between 5.0x and 8.6x, which is a little slow, but not too bad. And all that through firewire, so no real complaints from me. Way faster than my 1x burner on DVD, only thing it lacks is DVD-RAM. My CDR now lives at work since I don't really need it at home.

  9. don't bother to take out any drive. I was in your same shoes and i just went EXTERNAL. Now I currently have a CD writer, DVD ROM drive, and a brand new NEC 8x +-R/RW ND 2500 USB 2.0. I have never been happier with three drives you have so many options. plus reading the DVD to the hard drive seems to work faster on my DVD ROM drive. And then burning only takes 15 min or so. and the NEC 8x +-R/RW ND 2500 USB 2.0 writer is great no frisbys yet.
